3D Scanning

For 3D scanning assignment I chose to use 123D Catch . It's not the best quality program but it's a good pick if you want to play around with 3D scanning without purchasing expensive hardware and software. All you need is a smartphone and a lot of patience since the process seems to take for ever and doesn't always take at the first time. (or second). I would not use if precise measurements are needed. I did think of a few other ways to use it and once I do I'll put the result here. For now here is a Happy Buddha (or something like that) that I brought back from lovely Vietnam. Its supposed to bring luck but it didn't work this time. As you can see below the its head was deformed and other details were lost in the process. In the gif you can see all the pics I had used to make this scan. This is just one of a few I attempted to make. All with similar defects.

Designing

For this assignment I wanted to create something that can use the technology in an interesting way. I decided to create a complicated shape with a ball trapped inside, something like a miniature model of a roller coaster.

First I tried modeling with Rhino but I'm still a beginner with the program so when I didn't get the result that I was aiming for I went to Project Shapeshifter. There I played with a few shapes until I found one I liked. Then I downloaded it and opened it in Rhino where I made some changes and added the ball.

3D Printing

Once I understood the process and the shape I created I went back to the original shape and made it into STL. To make the support I had downloaded Mashmixer. The next in the process was Cura where I choose NO support and only adjusted the printing preferences.

With the printed model done all was left to do was to cut out all the support which was pretty easy using a cutter and a little sanding to remove hard edges and what was left over from the support.
