Not having much success with the scanner I considered using 123D - my intention here was to scan my car and alter the image such that I could use the image to create a scalextric car as this is one of the challenges I set my students.
In order to test the software and ensure that I had the correct procedures I photographed a small carved owl within the house.
I found that this was not as straight forward as it first sounded, it is difficult within a home to get a place where you can go around an object completely to photograph it. I eventually settled on using a tripod in the middle of the room and walking around it to take photos. I became aware of the light level but paid heed to the warning about using flash photography.
This was presentable and quite impressive so I prepared to head out the next day and photograph my car with the intend or arranging the stl file such that it would be compatible with the scalextric cars.
To get this scan you must take into account the time that it took when you add all the parts together.
Finding a car park empty enough to park the car and be able to walk around it, taking 70 photographs, uploading these and then waiting on the process to be completed. For the car I estimate that it took possibly as long as 6 hours.
Unfortunately after all that time the image made the car look as though it had been rolled on a corner. This is despite photographing the car whilst it was dirty to try and cut down on reflections.
So again the image was not useable.
