11 Composites
#1 Application of the composites unit to the K-12 sector in Newport County. Marine Trades constitutes 1/3 of the economy in Newport County (Rhode Island). Skillcraft in composities is critical to that sector. Fab Newport is working on an articulation agreement with the Internatioanl Yacht Restoration School (they have a composites lab) for the K-12 modules dealing with composites.
#2 Class activities:The composites class consisted of two components. I first practiced on using a bowl as a form
(image on the left of the picture). One idea is to have bowls that match your curtains. I then took a cardboard 3-D structure cut on the laser cutter (image on the right of the picture-a cardboard tunnel) and encased it in a MIT t-shirt (from the 25th anniversary of the class of 1969). I plan to cut the structure in half to show a cross section and conduct load tests. One suggestion for an actual school activity is to make a pinata out of composites. We'll try that as long as noone gets hurt.
