invention, intellectual property, and income

week 18.

in this week we will focus on preparing a presentation for our final project, we should create a video and slides, and the Task for this week as follow.

invention, intellectual property, and income

the project that i am working on is a creative art work, I didnt copy the project from anyone just i saw what other are made and then i came up with my original thought and put my creative touch on it, so in order to make the project be identified as my original work I need to protect it with either of patents or copyrights or trademarks.

before I tell you which one i will choose lets me explain these terms first

Patents

a Patents are a right granted to an inventor that allows them to exclude all others from making, using, or selling their invention for 20 years. In the U.S. the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office reviews and approves patent applications, which provide protection against others stealing their idea.

Copyrights

Copyright refers to the legal right of the owner of intellectual property. In simpler terms, copyright is the right to copy. This means that the original creators of products and anyone they give authorization to are the only ones with the exclusive right to reproduce the work.

Trademarks

The term trademark refers to a recognizable insignia, phrase, word, or symbol that denotes a specific product and legally differentiates it from all other products of its kind. A trademark exclusively identifies a product as belonging to a specific company and recognizes the company’s ownership of the brand.

how to protect it

in this week lecture nail was explaining to us the process to protect your work with each of these terms, and he explained more about patents and how long it will take to protect an invention and what i understaded is it might take one to tow year in order to get patent and it might cost around 2 - 10K$ depend on where and how long i want to protect it, so this option is not suitable for me.

Trademarks are made for company that have working liceence also i need to pay around 3K in order to have it, so this option also is not suitable for me, so i left with copyright which it dose not require any payment to protect your work with just you need to declare that this work is protected with copyright license, to know more about copyrights click Here.

what we need to understand is that there is many type of copyright and when you want to protect your work with it you need to specify exactly which one you want?

here is a list of copyright types

Creative common

After i got introduced to deferent type of license i decided to use creative common, and inside this license there is different types and i need to know about them to chose the best fit for my project.

copyright
Creative Commons

Creative Commons is a global nonprofit organization that enables sharing and reuse of creativity and knowledge through the provision of free legal tools.

What does CC mean ?

The CC buttons are a shorthand way to convey the basic permissions associated with material offered under CC licenses.

Creative Commons License Types :

There are 6 diffrent types of creative commons license.

Attribution CC BY :

This license lets others distribute, remix, adapt, and build upon S work, even commercially, as long as they credit you for the original creation. This is the most accommodating of licenses offered. Recommended for maximum dissemination and use of licensed materials.

Attribution-ShareAlike CC BY-SA :

This license lets others remix, adapt, and build upon your work even for commercial purposes, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms.

Attribution-NoDerivs CC BY-ND :

This license lets others reuse the work for any purpose, including commercially; however, it cannot be shared with others in adapted form, and credit must be provided to you.

Attribution-NonCommercial CC BY-NC :

This license lets others remix, adapt, and build upon your work non-commercially, and although their new works must also acknowledge you and be non-commercial, they don’t have to license their derivative works on the same terms.

Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike CC BY-NC-SA :

This license lets others remix, adapt, and build upon your work non-commercially, as long as they credit you and license their new creations under the identical terms.

Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs CC BY-NC-ND :

This license is the most restrictive of our six main licenses, only allowing others to download your works and share them with others as long as they credit you, but they can’t change them in any way or use them commercially.

so with all this information about copyrights finally I decided to make my final project licensed under a creative common license and with Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike CC BY-NC-SA type.

Dissemination

my project is an outdoor walkway so the way to spread this project is by making it in deferent areas and city, and i can allow others to do the same

How i will make Income ?

the way i can make income out of this project is from making it in a specific place or consult other who want to make it.

Future Probabilities

in future i will create more designs and with more complicated light effects to inspire and impress even more.
