8. Computer controlled machining

This weeks task was very surprising to say the least Today we had the task of building our own large 3-D printed CNC object. Everything went smoothly Until the final process.

Project Idea

The task for this week was to build something large. I decided to build a large 3’ x 4’ light board that can be used to layer images for illustrationThe first thing I did was do a rough sketch of design in what at this point is the one of my favorite programs clips studio paint pro ex.What I did was illustrate the design and convert it to a PNG file.

Procedure

As I was doing the design for the box I measured the width of the material I was using. With a pair of micrometers. The material I decided to choose was Birchwood which was relatively expensive. However I found that it was the best quality for what I was trying to do. The seat are used was 8‘ x 4‘ and the curve measured out to be .72 inches which is what I found to be the standard for most plywood of that caliber. Once I saved my to the sketch as a PNG file I uploaded it into fusion 360. From there are used the line tool to create a cut path that I wanted the shop but to get out. Before I began extruding bodies I went to modify then went to the parameters section and keyed in the parameters I wanted for the piece as a reference Of measurement. Once I keyed in all of my measurements , I used the line tool to map out the Cutpath.

Results

Once I had all of that together me and my lab partner Gyasi re-orchestrated it in the Vcarve program I gave him the Dimensions as he keyed them in. Once we have the program sit in the car if we placed some of my components onto his sheet so that we can cut with a Sufficient enough space to be reused. As the board was being Cut an error with the Z axis occurred. Leaving one of my pieces slightly damaged.

Conclusion

We’re not fully sure exactly what caused the mishap however there is some speculation that the fluorescent lights may have caused the Z limit switch to loose it’s Positioning. Sad to say my project has been temporarily rendered and complete until a later date dueUs running out of time at the other fab lab
