Project Development
Week 18

Assignment: document a final project that integrates the range of units covered

Programs/Machines: EVERYTHING

Lessons Learned: FabLabs are pretty cool!

Past Weeks Utilized: Week 10 - Inputs, Week 12 - Outputs, Week 14 - Mechanism Design, Week 15 - Interface Programming

The installation focuses on the interaction between fabricated objects and naturally driven forces. Ideally it would exist as an array of 4x4 two meter high objects will be situated in a dark area, able to be activated by touch or by wind. The inhabitants of the space will mingle through, activating inflated globes through touch bringing to life light and user generated noise. The fabrication of the installation will involve mainly 3d printed elements and open source electronics. Each element will contain a “Bar-duino” with a 3-axis ADXL335 that gives its input to a LED and a Octopus passive buzzer. Each output element's intensity varies according to the inclination of the 3-axis accelerometer. Each inflated globe will have the LEDs embedded within the globe itself. The stock of the piece will be held by a spring that will mount the sensors monitoring the degradation and angle in relation to the force vs static state, this process will generate a color and a noise. The installation can be activated by the wind so it does not need the interaction with users, but when people are inserted into the space the activation will be increased due to human’s inherent curiosity.

2.0

After exploring the possibility of creating a digital data drawing machine, I found the idea of manipulating a spatial form inside a gallery more rewarding. What is at play in the scenario is a data gathering apparatus and a resultant form mechanically orchestrated to shift and stir in response to ecological fluctuations. While the ideology that was working throughout the 1.0 version seemed successful, bridging the gap between environments in a more real-time digital interaction through mechanical intervention ultimately proves to be more valuable experiment.

Electronics

While I would enjoy to create a fully environmental encompassing kinetic sculpture I will explore a 1:1 relationship involving the wind at the Valldaura Self-Sufficient Lab. Eventually I will create a more in-depth data gathering apparatus working with all environmental conditions, however starting with wind gives me the opportunity to focus toward a single interaction and resultant. The exact fabrication will be a tripod that transitions into a wind vane mounted on top whose directionality will be interpreted in a gallery setting through an articulated mechanism. With an interaction between two elements, I know I will have to work with networking. Looking forward I know I will like to eliminate any problems with a completely integrated board, so in order to break the board down I would like to play with a break-out board hybrid style. I will be utilizing ratiometric hall effect sensors in order to calculate exact position so that this direction may be sent to a servo, re-visualizing the measured conditions. In addition, I will be using a AtMega 328 because of the number of available pins and the ability to expand, adding a more developable future to the project.
