Final Project

This week I worked on defining my final project idea and started to getting used to the documentation process.

Idea

I want to show people we are all on this planet together and we affect one another.

I have had the idea for this project for years by now, it is definitly more artistic than some of the others i have seen/heard from other students. But I don’t think that matters to much, it still involves making and electronics. It is a world map based on the dymaxion globe/fuller projection. I would also like it to be a heatmap, to be able to display current events, like fires diseases, or even political climate. And last but not least every triangle should be able to be an “individual”, meaning they don’t have to be connected to work.

Many ideas, sketches and iterations have gone over this.

Research

This is a file you can just find on the wikipedia page of the Dymaxion map. I turned it into paths, using the knowledge i gained from week 3. And then I cut it with a laser to make the small one. small dymaxion globe

Than i build a few big triangels to figure out how big i wanted the final project to be. I can say with confidence that this will be the max size. This icosahedron has edges of 1 meter, and it’s already taller than me. big big icosahedron

2D and 3D Modeling

In week 3 I made a few ideas for corner brackets that i could use for the final assembly.

Materials

I have not a very good idea yet of the final assembly, but I’m already looking into potential materials

Qty Description Price Link Notes
1 Acrylic ????? $
1 Micro-controller ????? $
1 adress leds ????? $

For example, I’m thinking of making the plates out of a ribbed acrylic or styreen sheet, for both rigidity and weight. But also to be able to add holes for leds. Also since week 9 I had the idea of programming my own microchip and making every face individual, so if the globe isn’t built, it can still function as a wall piece.
