Individual Assignment
Dissemination Plan of Final Project
After investigating different choices in protecting my potential Intellectual Property, I decide to make my CAD design publically available on Thingiverse and the complete design on Instructables or Hackaday, without impose any restriction or license.
The reasons encourages me to take such a strategy include:
- This project involve the IP and original ideas from the book and movie of Harry Potter. Defining the boundary between the IP's contribution and my own effort can be tricky and risky.
- This project contains the contribution and kind help from many people and tutorials. I hope my design can provide the same free help for others as well.
- Another reason is that my design of clock used many icons and patterns that were only free for non-commercial usgae, which further encouraging me to make my design free and openly available.
- I have been a Harry Potter fan from the beginning of 21st century, I really like to make my design as a fan art craft that shows my respect to this novel rather than make it into a commercial product.
- Last but not least, the final project result is a prototype instead of a readily functioning product.
Based on these reasons, I would like the project to be public available and will not consider applying any license. But in case I may change my mind later, I did explore the different licenses and considered what types of IP protection I should apply if I would like to have my design protected later.
Potential Licenses Options
I found that Creative Commons licenses can be a choice, but only if I would like to protect the design. If I want to apply to this license, Creative Commons with ShareAlike and NonCommercial may be my top choices.
ShareAlike (sa)
- You let others copy, distribute, display, perform, and modify your work, as long as they distribute any modified work on the same terms. If they want to distribute modified works under other terms, they must get your permission first.
NonCommercial (nc)
- You let others copy, distribute, display, perform, and (unless you have chosen NoDerivatives) modify and use your work for any purpose other than commercially unless they get your permission first.
I also researched MIT,Apache, and BSD licenses. These are more software-focused licenses, which are hence not applicable to my project.
Considering different options and comparing different licenses, I made my mind to choose the CC license, which I believe meets my requirements.
Video Clip Draft
This video is made with PowerPoint. This is a rough version that aims to test the functions of video making so the timeline and words was not well-tuned in this version. Better switches between slides and better audio effect will be achieved in the final version, which will also be accomplished with PowerPoint.
