The major tasks of the first week include:
Websites Used: WiseMapping, Pinterest
Brainstorming
The ideation process of this project follows a engineering product design mindset, which starts of "Defining the Right Problem to Solve." Thus, in order to accurately define the problem to solve and to comprehensively explore the solution space, an individual brain storming was conducted on WiseMapping, which is a mind mapping tool that provide great support to free brain storming.
Potential Final Project
After carefully evaluating the potenial ideas, I decided to create an electronic version of Weasley's Clock.
This is a magic clock that belongs to the Weasley's family in Harry Potter. This clock has nine golden hands, each of which represents a member of their household. Instead of time, the clock displays the locations, including "home","school","working","in transit" and other possible locations. The golden clock hand of each member will automatically detect the location of the corresponding member and point to the location. While we, the non-magicians, have owned much more convenient devices to stay connected, it would be nice for us to have such a clock in our lives that enhance the sense of belonging and connection.
There are two major reasons for me to choose this idea for the final project. On the one hand, a clock seems to be within the feasible scope of Fab Academy, which will definitely involve laser cutting, 3D printing, circuits design, application development, as well as other topics that will be covered by the courses. On the other hand, the need for emotional connection and support has been increasing among modern humans. While they are connected via mobile devices, the way they interact with each other seems to provide less sense of connection than traditional methods. Thus, I hope to develop a product that can address this gap, to which the Weasley's clock seems to be perfect.
Scretching Ideas
After searching for relative designs on Pinterest, I have decided several elements that I will include in the clock design.
I am a Fab Academy student, responsible for:
● Attending class lectures and participating in reviews
● Developing and documenting projects assigned to introduce and demonstrate skills
● Honestly reporting on my work, and appropriately attributing the work of others
● Working safely
● Leaving workspaces in the same (or better) condition than I found them
● Participating in the upkeep of my lab
● Ensuring that my tuition to cover local and central class costs is covered
● Promoting a respectful environment free of harassment and discrimination
