03 - Computer-Controlled Cutting

COMPUTER-CONTROLLED CUTTING

6 February 2013

The assignment this week was to design and make something on the laser cutter using press-fit construction. I've been needing a phone stand for my desk phone at work, so I thought, "Why not make one?"

Here is an example of a phone stand:

I had a basic idea for the shape in mind, based on the above design. The prototyping was done in corrugated cardboard. My first step was to determine which notch size would give me a tight enough friction fit to construct the model.

To do this, I measured 5 spots on the cardboard and came up with a thickness range of 0.165" - 0.180". I then made a series of test-notches on the laser cutter to see which worked best.

Out of those 4 notches, the 0.165" was the best, but it still wasn't tight enough so I made another set of trial notches ranging in size from 0.157" - 0.165".

I was satisfied with the fit of the 0.157" notch, so I went with it.

Here are the parts being cut out on the laser cutter.

Here are some pictures of the parts after they were cut out, assembled, and finally a trial at work:

Pretty good for not having actually measured my phone! It is about 2" too deep, so I will shorten that for the final version. I only cut out three cross-supports, but the final will have five. The other modification will be to the number of lengthwise supports on the top holding the phone. There are currently four, but I would like a slightly sturdier platform so I will add at least one more and move the outer ones closer to the edge.

Update on 18 February 2013 - My final version of the phone stand:

Here's a future wooden Balance Center of Excellence sign. Some might say that I like my job a bit too much...but you'll be thankful next time you're flying and your drink doesn't shake out of your glass because the engines are so nicely balanced! ;)
