Assignment 3 :Computer Aided Design

Task

  1. Individual Assignment:make something bigmodel (raster, vector, 2D, 3D, render, animate, simulate, ...) a possible final project, and post it

This week is about CAD I never used CAD before,so I was much excited of this week I am worst at designing, but I think this is time to overcome the fear of designing so when the Neil's lecture ended and I got confused where to start for this week. After discussion with our local instructors they suggested that first go through small things and tutorials and sequencly so I started working on 2D design and raster, vector according to below plan.

Plan for this week

  • 1. Rastor 2D design -GIMP/PhotoShop
  • 2. Vector 2D - CorelDraw
  • 3. 3D design - Fusion 360/SolidWorks/Skechup
  • 4. Animation - Solidworks
  • 5. Rendering,Simulation-Solidworks

Raster Graphics

For raster I decided to work on GIMP.I made one logo by using jpeg image,I put named it as "@key",for this I refered you tube "video Tutorial"

.

@key

How I made logo?

I open new window in GIMP,then I set page size as 1280*1280.

GIMP

I import the image

Import

Trace

Then I trace it by red colour set background colour as white ,then draw the circle and fit the traced image on the drawn circle.

Import

What I Undesrstand about Raster?

When to Use Raster Images?

Raster images are used in photography and digital applications. When you take a picture with a phone or a camera the image is recorded as pixel data, and when these images are uploaded online the end result is a raster image. To edit these images you need access to raster-based programs like Adobe Photoshop or Shutterstock Editor. For design work, it is best to use these programs for photography and imagery only; avoid using them to design logos and icons.

File Formats for Raster Images

Raster files are saved in various formats:
  • .tiff (Tagged Image File Format)
  • .psd (Adobe Photoshop Document)
  • .pdf (Portable Document Format)
  • .jpg (Joint Photographics Expert Group)
  • .png (Portable Network Graphic)
  • .gif (Graphics Interchange Format)
  • .bmp (Bitmap Image File)

While learning the Raster graphic I used GIMP only,i tried to use Photoshop but it is not free and open source so I prefered GIMP, it is easy to learn for beginner,I saw photoshop tutorial as well but I liked GIMP more personally.

Vector Graphics

For vector I used trial version of Coreldraw I made key holder board in it,in next week's assignment I will engrave this design on plywood.

Key Holder

For above key holder

  • I took simple rectangle of size 670mm X 450mm,
  • then at equidistance I made offset of line then
  • made circle and using text command I wrote the name for each key.
  • Download Corel Draw files here

    Inkscape

I also used Inkscape as it free software .In Inkscape I used basic command and try to make simple shape that looks pretty good, here are all screenshots how I did it ,this all are self explanatory.

In file window go to document property and set it as shown in screenshot

    Draw simple circle

Remove it's boarder and at the right side of window in Fill and stroke option select option as given

Add path as stich sub path

Then circle looks like,we can adjust and move it by our choice, same process can be apply to other shapes I tried star

    What I Undesrstand about Vector?

A vector file is sometimes called a geometric file. Most images created with tools such as Adobe Illustrator and CorelDraw are in the form of vector image files. Vector image files are easier to modify than raster image files (which can, however, sometimes be reconverted to vector files for further refinement).

    File Formats for Vector Images

Vector files are saved in various formats:

    .ai (Adobe Illustrator document)

    .eps (Encapsulated PostScript)

    .svg (Scalable Vector Graphic)

.pdf (Portable Document Format; only when saved from vector programs)

I used corel Draw and Inkscape for vector design, both software are user freiendly inkscape is free and corel draw is not ,but I have little knowledge of corel draw previously so I am comfortable with corel draw.

    Raster Vs Vector?

    Raster Vs Vector

Here we can understand easily difference between raster and vector by image.

    3D design

For 3d designing part I have decided to complete major part of my final project ,I tried Solidworks ,fusion 360 and skechup,I go through the tutorials for all of them then I think as a beginner I should use Solidworks

I started worked on Solidworks first of all I go to help tab and oepened "solidwork Tutorial" and I made 1 part,as shown in below image after doing this part now I know the basic commands like exctrude, exctrude cut, fillet, etc.

I tried one more simple parametric object

Steps I followed Open Solidworks window-File-New-Part-Circle-smart dimension(put value You want)-draw centerline on both side of circle-draw line in 3 sides of circle inside-mirror the image-set circle dimension as Global variable-set dimension to other component in propotion to global variable-ok

    first Tut

After refering some you tube video I made simple frame for my final project

    Door frame

    Outer box frame

After making this two separate part now time for assembly.againg I opened new window in solidworks but now I choosed assembly tab and import this above two parts

    Assembly

    Part-2 Hinge

I also made hinges for my final project for this

  • I took rectangle,50mm x 70 mm,then extrude it
  • then draw the circle of 5mm at the edge of rectangle
  • then extrude it partialy at 3 different place for fixing the shaft.
  • then copy the same part but the shaft position will be different
  • then I draw the shaft, and in assembly window I assembled 3 parts
  • Hinge1

    Hinge1

    Assembly

    Animation

I used animation in solidworks for the movement of hinges,I want to add more animation for the movement of door.I recorded the moment of the hing ,but when I was started to document it the video size was more than 2 MB so I reduced the size and upload this file to youtube, below I am putting youtube video uploaded by me.

    Motion study

  • In solidworks for animation we got "animation" option at the left side of bottom then
  • Then choose the time interval as per requirement
  • I choose time interval of 2 second upto 12 Second
  • Then play the animation,it will look like this.
  • References and credits:For solidworks I refered some you tube tutorails and tutorials by solidworks ,but where I stuck my friends from Vigyan Ashram Akshay Sawant and Shubham Shembade helps me to solve the issues

    Download Solidworks files here

I also used Skechup and fusion 360 for 3D design

In fusion 360 Itried to make parametric stand leg I can't explore it more .here I am mentioning the step

    What I did?

1.Open new file -unsaved-new component-choose right plane to sketch

2.Sketch the straight line on horizontal plane -extend sketch as per required shape-give sketch-skech dimention-set dimension I choose 225 mm for horizontal plane,125 for vertical line-slant line approx.-90 degree upward and 14 mm towards origin in downwarddirection-55 mm from vertical line to origin-make it constraint

    3.For parametric setting go to modify-choose paramateric-add parametric--set parameter I set "t" as 0.25" as width

    4.Modify-Extrude-set value as"t"

5.copy the excruded body and paste it at 180 distance.

    Fusion 360

I used this 2 softwares ,all are user freindly but I liked solidworks more, and I made my all project files in solidworks.
For 3 D designing I used Solidwork,Fusion 360 and Skechup, among three I liked solidworks more it is easy to acess and understand but it is not opensource and it required atleast 1 GB space so I moved to fusion 360 it has 3 years free educational licence for student, I faced many problem while learning fusion 360 at begining stage like what is constraint, how to save and export it coz fusion save their file on cloud but after some practise now I am familiar with it.I also used skechup but I think it can't use for parametric or complex enginnering drawing .

    Summary

After doing this assignment ,I learnt

Raster & Vector- A raster image has a specific number of pixels,Vector images are mathematical calculations from one point to another that form lines and shapes.

3D design- I learn 3d visualisation of any object, animation and obiously CAD.
