Week 12: Applications and Implications

Assignment: Propose a final project masterpiece that integrates the range of units covered, Answering following questions

Question:

I have decided to make a levitating water fountain with water drops levitating in mid air as my final project for FAB15. Following video will help you understand my idea more effectively.
Now let's get on to answering questions..

What will it do?

The main idea will be the same as to levitate the water the other thing i intended to do was to try for more than just one water strip as seen in many videos. I initially i over ambitiously thought of making a seven segment display whereas shortage of time and other requirements made it tough for me to go that long, rather like neil said rather than making something complex and big but unsuccessfull i went on to make it decent but successfull. Hence conclusively the final output nneds to show discrete water drops levitating/going against gravity.

Who's done what beforehand?

There are many video and links showing same kind of work but almost none has really moved ahead of the one simple water droplet strip. Most of the videos are video edited. Although my experiance with this idea earned me an opinion that it is not as easy as it sounds as there are many ways to do it even more limitations in terms of electronics and otherwise physical. So going back to question, such fountains are commertially available for around 300USD or even more hence i found many different yet confusing ways to do this. Video at the start of the page shows one of many relavent work.

What will you design?

What materials and components will be used?

Where will come from?

Most of the parts mentioned are available in our lab, hence i will only need a few things like solenoid, water pump and some misscelinious. aand these are easily available in pakistan online stores. I bought watter pump locally whereas for solenoides i placed an online order at daraz and they delivered at my doorstep.

How much will they cost?

Component Quantity Price
Highly Bright LEDs 60 (4 strips, 15 leds each) PKR:34.87 , 0.23USD (approx)
Solenoid Valves 2 PKR:350, 2.3USD (approx)
Water Pump 1 PKR:450, 3USD (approx)
N-Channel MOSFETS 4 (2 side leds, 1 solenoid, 1 pump) PKR:83.39 , 0.55USD (approx)
ATMEGA328 1 PKR:209.24 , 1.38USD (approx)
ACRYLIC 2 (transparent-yellow) PKR:450 , 3USD (approx)
3d Prinitnng Material 1g PKR:21.23 , 0.14USD (approx)
Copper sheets for PCB Milling 1 PKR:30.33 , 0.2USD (approx)
Misscelinious N/A PKR:1516.25 , 10USD (approx)
Total 9 different components PKR:6065.00 , 40USD (approx)

What parts and systems will be made?

What processes will be used?

What questions need to be answered?

How will it be evaluated?

The project shall be evaluated on the basis of descretion in water strip as showing water droplets out of continuous water, and then the illusion. Illusion is enough i believe to evaluate the project. Like if water droplets can be seen going against gravity sometimes, that is the 100%+ output by all means, whereas the descretion would be the key factor as it will still be the illusion as we see the water droplets out of continuous water. Water droplets moving agaiinst gravity will be the effect, an add-on but illusion is the key task as once it is acheived various effects can be created.
