Week 18: Invention, Intellectual Property, and Income

Assignment

Develop a plan for dissemination of your final project

Complete your final project, tracking your progress:

  • what tasks have been completed, and what tasks remain?
  • what's working? what's not?
  • what questions need to be resolved?
  • what will happen when?
  • what have you learned?

Dissemination Plan

MR. Flippers is staying in my room for my personal use while I study. I made it for myself because I get distracted easily and need help staying focused. My friends can also try it out when they come over to see if it helps them too.

For sharing online, my documentation will be on the Fab Academy network so other students can see how I made it and maybe build their own version. That's pretty much it.

Intellectual Property (License)

I am using the Creative Commons Attribution NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) license.

antenna

This means:

  • Anyone can share and remix my work
  • They have to give me credit
  • No commercial use (I am not selling this)
  • They have to use the same license if they share their version

Income / Business Model

No. I am not selling MR. Flippers.

Project Progress (What's Done and What's Left)

Completed:

  • Custom PCB milled and soldered (after fixing short circuits)
  • 3D printed penguin enclosure (many reprints but it finally fits)
  • Menu system and timers programmed and working
  • RTC logging for Focus Blueprint
  • Rotary encoder navigation
  • OLED displays showing face expressions

Remaining:

  • The bare minimum is already finished but further improvements could be made like adding the posture feature which was abandoned due to insufficient time.

What's working:

  • Timers and menu navigation work fine
  • OLED animations show up correctly
  • RTC keeps time and logs sessions
  • The speaker and DFPlayer can play all voice alerts and sound tracks

What's not working yet:

  • Everything is working accordingly.

Questions to Resolve

  • How long will the OLED displays last before they stop working or start burning out?

What Will Happen When?

Work on improving the UI further this week.

What I learned:

  • How to use the Forms in Fusion to design curved enclosures
  • How to design standoffs and holders so everything fits inside
  • How to debug I2C when multiple devices are connected
  • How to design and fabricate a custom PCB board for your project.
  • How to program various elecronics such as the 8ohms speaker, dfplayer, rtc and encoder.
  • How to manage a big project with lots of parts and work even when things aren't working😭

This is what I have so far:
