About me

Hi! My name is Tomi Nieminen, from Helsinki, Finland.

I've just graduated from Aalto University's IDBM programme which integrates business, design and technology to enable students to lead interdisciplinary creativity. Before that I studied adult education and learning (B.Ed.) at the University of Helsinki with minors in entrepreneurship, design, new media and computer science. Digital fabrication is where all of it comes together into something you can hold.

I'm a systems thinker and widely curious lifelong learner and drawn to problems where figuring out the question is most of the work. My research background is in reflexivity and team learning in entrepreneurship and product development — and through Fab Academy I've been extending that toward fab labs as learning environments, which is where I'd like to keep working.

I came into this programme as a beginner in digital fabrication. Over the past months I've worked through CAD, 3D printing, laser and CNC machining, PCB design and fabrication, embedded programming and system integration — here you can find documentation of both successes and failures. It is still an ongoing process.

Outside the lab I find meaning in nature, travel, yoga, and above all in my amazing 2 years old daughter
