The idea

In my project I want to incorporate technology with fashion.  The idea is to make a project combining 3d technology and the world of fashion with the undeniable strength of nature.

The idea is to make fierce shoes that have a lava type look to them. The idea is partly inspired by 3d printed lamps and the idea is to leave gaps big enough for light to seep through. (Maybe censor will make it so that when a person taps 2 times the colours will change and/or turn off.?)

The idea is when you step for a certain amount of time it will look as if the shoes are running with lava, therefore giving it the title "The floor is lava interactive heels".

There is an active erruption going on in Iceland right now. Down below is a link where you can watch it live!

My inspirations

Nature

I was largely inspired by volcanoes, since I live in Iceland they are not really a rare sight and I am fascinated by the beauty of it all. The nearly untamable power of our planet is unfathomable. An eruption started on my birthday while working on the shoes: https://www.ruv.is/english/2024-05-29-eruption-on-reykjanes-peninsula-413853

Lady Gaga, Alexander McQueen and Monster high

I was also inspired by Lady Gaga  her undeniably unique way of challenging the rules of fashion

Monster high

The Monster High doll shoes are all so unique and fierce I really wanted to encorporate them into my design.

Lord of the Rings

I was partly inspired by Mordor.

Imagine. Mount Doom beneath your very feet. Sauron himself would probably want to snatch a pair.

Plan

Input:

click here for input week link

Button and Accelerometer
The Accelerometer measures acceleration along multiple axes, x, y and z, allowing detection of movement, tilt, and orientation of the shoes.  I use ADXL 345 accelerometer (https://3dverk.is/en/products/adxl345) to detect whether the shoes are moving or not.

Output:

click here for output week link

Vibration motor: An electric motor that vibrates after the trigger for a few seconds before the "eruption"

Neopixels : I  Neopixelstick 8 piece
The adafruit neopixel strip will be the light source for this light up shoe. The colours will be cold in their natural state but when the individual has the shoes still for too long the fire show begins. A floor is lava concept.

Power:

USB  powerbank.

USB powerbanks may not be ideal for this sorta thing since they add unessecary weight to the shoes but we went with it anyway since there is not much time left

Changes:

So the original idea was to make high heels where the heel would be sculpted into clay, 3d scanned and then molded.
After some consideration I have decided to make platforms instead of having the heel separable.

Week To Do list (final project) Think about this Thoughts Did it get done
Basic

create base for shoe What does it need?

Make size accurate prototype Does it look right? Does it feel comfortable?
In progress

Plan placement for electronic Will it work if I put it here? Is there a better place?

placement -input How will I trigger the animation? Step response

placement-output Where will I place the lights? How do I make sure they look cool without risking fragility

Decide placement of materials Where does it need support? What material is uncomfortable? Whats easy to break? What can lead the light throughout the shoe?

Scan foot How do I set up parametric rules for this shoe? How can I use my foot for reference to build out the shoe?
scanning done

Make blender model

Heel

Pick heel material /method What is strong enough to support a persons weight?

Make prototype with clay How do I want it to look? Is it cool? Is it wobbly? Could you walk with this?
CANCELLED

scan it Does it work with the shoe?
CANCELLED

make it in blender Do I wanna 3d print it
CANCELLED
Interior

choose material How do I make it comfortable

make base (under foot support) Does it support my foot?

soft inside?

Outside

Choose material Is it supposed to be hard? Soft? Is it made only of 3d, chainmail? sown?

Design details Will it be different parts?

Technical stuff

Make new motherboard (make sure it works this time)

Solder it What parts does it need? What will be connected to it?

Connect LED/NEOPIXELS

Program animation LAVAA

Program trigger (output) How will it be triggered? Step response? Distance? Light? Noise?

The inspiration is Icelandic nature, Lady Gaga type fashion and Monster High shoes

Prototyping

the first ever sketch:

Shoesold sketch

Version 1
Traced my foot and began trying to make it at least resemble a high heel

Shoe size: 39
Front platform height: 10cm
Heel: 16cm

Pros

  • size accurate
  • Kinda cool looking
  • Looks like a high heel

Cons

  • Not very stable
  • Heel not very stable
Prototype1

Version 2
Starting by taping my entire foot
Prototyping2
Tapedfoot
Then i traced it and made it into a high heel

Version 3

I decided to make platforms instead of heels. This was mostly due to stability concerns. I began by tracing my foot, importing it into blender, saving as an svg file and then extruding it in Fusion 360.
fusion v3

Sadly something went wrong with the measurements but its okay because I now had this cute stand for my sunglasses!

Version 3

So for this version i wanted to try using the geometric tools in blender. Up until now I had not used it and I could not figure it out. It turned out that I happened to have an old version of blender so it didn´t have the tools for it. So that kinda explained why I could not figure out how to work with it.

Anyway! I used this super useful tutorial to learn the basics.
In this tutorial I learned how to use a random selection generation to make sick patterns. Instead of using an IcoSphere like in the video, I used a 3d scan of my foot!
myfootGeometrics

Version 4

after playing around in blender for a while I decided it was time to start using fusion. Mostly due to the fact I realised my foot was too big for the 3d printer so I may need to do this in parts. I began following this tutorial I found online

What does it do?

These shoes are more art than function but are sure to make jaws drop when you enter the room. These fierce and fiery shoes will look like they belong in a cool art museum if all goes well. It could potentially be used by drag queens, models and anyone who wants to stand out.

The shoes will have built in sensors, most likely motion sensors that trigger the light animation when you walk. This will give a cool fire/lava effect. The 3d parts will be made in blender most likely. The lights will be made by leaving carved gaps in the black material, leaving see through material within the gaps. The see through.  The bottom of the platforms will most likely be molded.

Zara Hadid: architect who made a 3d shoe collection
As a designer, you first have to understand how shoes land with each step, how the wearer can balance and also the ergonomics and dynamics of how to ensure comfort and support – it’s all about working with the foot. but of course our intention was also to create a shoe that explores new possibilities in terms of design and manufacturing techniques. all these aspects have been carefully considered as a whole, and I don’t think one is more important than the others.-Zara Hadid

What did i design?

Shoes!

What materials and components were used?

Where did they come from?

How much did they cost?

What parts and systems were made?

What processes were used?

What questions were answered?

What worked? What didn't?

How was it evaluated?

What are the implications?

Other ideas

If you use these please dont hesitate to contact me because I would love to see it :D

  • Spiky shoes: look normal until you push a button and they go spiky
  • Talk to me Mr President: A historical sign that tells stories when you walk past it (interactive and could possibly be connected with AI)
  • Smart Backpack: a backpack that would alert you when you forget your things (a weight scale would be at the bottom and it would have a programmed calendar to figure how much you typically have each day. On top of that it would have a specific pocket for keys and car keys that would alert an alarm each time an item goes missing. On the outside you have buttons with a checklist with lights that shows whats in the bag (it can be programmed to change))
  • Desk buddy: an octopus, bat, crab or other cute animal that would run around your desk and hand you things like an interactive pencil holder that would hand you stuff.
  • Hot boot:self heating boots that sense when your feet are cold.
  • Dance till you're dead shoes: Shoes that alert you when they haven't sensed enough motion in a while and start blinking and playing music so you get going
  • The shapeshifting skirt: It has braces that move when you press a button on the belt so it changes shape depending on the event.
  • The crazy chessboard: when you place your piece on top of the enemies piece a trap door opens underneath said enemy and it falls down (downside you have to hold on to your piece and not drop it). Maybe underneath it could be angled so the pieces all fall into a small 3d printed prison.
  • Self opening drawer: Pretty self explanatory, you press a button and the little parts of the drawer open, maybe it could be a dispenser with a slide that sends the parts down to your desk
  • Mask makeover: A mask that does your makeup for you, lipstick and eyeshadow, you would have to draw what you want on a draw pad with a preset face and the machine would recreate it sorta like a printer.
  • Dance bot: Useless but starts dancing when it senses movement, maybe it could be incorporated so that it dances when it senses there isn't enough moisture in plant soil?
