Some considerations to materials integration in WeeK 17

Components packaging & electronics into the casing

How to integrate all the retractible system

I decided that the retractable system should be attached to the back of the garment to keep the electronics out of the way while you are wearing the garment. NOTE: The system will only move 4 sets of wings and will be connected to the servomotors by cables.

How to attach the wings to the garment

I used a button printed in PLA

Keeping the wings from moving while the garment was off required additional support, so a regular button wouldn't work. So, I designed a button with a small cavity that serves to fix the wings and keep them in one position. Click to download design
NOTE: The buttons were sewn to the garment with normal thread right next to the hoses where the cables pass through

How to hide all the system

I used an acrylic casing and black hose (3mm diameter)

The pcb that I used was very large, so, to hide it and integrate it in a more organic way with the garment, I used an acrylic plate and with the help of SmartCarve, I made a quick design to trim the edges and make the perforations that would be used to fix the piece to the garment with normal thread.
I used a heat gun to fold the edges and obtain a kind of box to contain all the cables on the board, so that the only thing visible were the servomotors (which were attached to the side of the box with industrial glue)

To move the wings I used "Jumpers" cable because that way I could solderng to the tips of the servomotor and to hide them, I fixed some pieces of black hose with thread that, in addition to hiding the cables, facilitates the movement of the cables.

How to hide the battery

To turn on the piece discreetly

I used a 2500 mAh battery to power the retractable system that connects to the board with a USB cable. I took advantage of the fact that the cable was long enough to pass the cable through the side and to integrate it into the garment, I designed a pocket that I sewed to the side like other garments.
