3D Scanning and Printing.
This week we present two assignments, one of them about scanning, in my case after turn around to various options I opted for scanning a panther footprint. And about the design of an object that can only be a 3D printer, after some tests I chose to design and manufacture a Moebius strip.
For the scanning activity I chose to scan a beautiful Yaguareté footprint that was loaned by the Department of Biology of the National University of Asunción.
The Yaguarete is the third largest feline in the world and the largest feline in South America. Their weight is usually between 56 and 96 kg, and they have a length between 162 and 183 cm..
Scan the fingerprint using an iPhone 12 phone and with the "3D SCANNER APP" application
With these pictures I made a 3D model and obtained:
To prepare the image we used the MeshMixer software, with which I cleaned and cut the shortcut, and also filled the 3D image.
With Flashprint software, I scaled it, and prepared for printing.
I made a first impression with the paw print in a horizontal position, The material used is a yellow PLA cable, and configured the impression with the following parameters:
5The file was saved in .gx format so it could be read by the printer. The printer used was a Flashforge Dreamer.
Taking advantage of the opportunity, make a second impression with the variation that makes a vertical impression of the same object. The same parameters were placed as in the previous print, except that some supports were added and we enabled the support option in the parameters.
Finally, when making a comparison between both prints, the second print has a lower definition, this is because the height is half the diameter of the holder.
For the assignment, designing a piece that cannot be made by subtractive method, I chose to make a Moebius strip. The Moebius strip is a topological curiosity, it is a geometric figure with a single face and a single edge. It normally consists of a ribbon of a certain length to which a turn or loop is made and joined at the ends. as the figure shows.
The design of the geometric figure I made was made with the fusion 360 software installed previously, to make the band more interesting I gave it two loops.
I added some details on the surface to better visualize how everything is one side. And use the FlashPrint program to prepare the print.
