Camera Interface
I wanted to align my work this week to help me on developing my final project. As such, I chose to create a web GUI to interact with the ESP32CAM. My documentation for setting up the ESP32CAM can be found on my documentation for Input Devices and Networking.
Outline
To create a web-based locally hosted GUI to access the ESP32CAM, I need to do a few things:
- Connect to the WiFi network
- Receive an assigned IP from the router
- Choose an open port
- Setup URI paths for backend control
- Setup URI path for the actual camera access.
- Startup the server on the IP
- Start listening for incoming connections on the specified IP address and port
- Serve the graphical user interface HTML onto the IP's root path
- Upon receiving an input, the HTML will do something and send the request along a URI path designed for handling that.
WiFi Connection
First, the ESP32CAM connects to a WiFi network.

This code connects the chip to the specified network and logs its success.
Receive Assigned IP
The IP address assignment is handled automatically by the DHCP server on the network once the WiFi connection is established. This job is done by the server and without any action on the ESP32CAM's part, meaning that there is no code for IP assignment. However, the assigned IP address is then logged with:

Choose Port
This code from app_httpd.cpp initializes the HTTP server configuration and starts the server on the default port.
URI Paths
The following code initializes 16 possible URI paths along with specific pre-defined ones. For example, the http://10.12.28.193/capture path would return the actual image taken from the camera feed.

The URI paths are mainly for backend control. For example, after a user clicks the button to take a picture on the frontend GUI, the HTML's JavaScript code will send a HTTP request to the server with the /capture URI, then display the returned image as the onscreen image. This means that theoretically, a user could directly connect to the URI through the assigned IP and port to receive the image, but it also allows the JS to call functions through HTTP.
Starting the Server
The actual server is then initialized.

Handling User GUI Interactions
Each action that the user can possibly execute on the HTML is handled by a URI handler. For example, the capture URI from above uses the capture_handler for image capture requests.

Other backend actions have similar handlers that are called when prompted to do so by a command from the HTML JavaScript. Each URI (/status, /control, /capture, /stream, /bmp, /xclk, /reg, /greg, /pll, and /resolution) each have their respective handler. The handler performs the actual code for the operation that the HTTP requests encapsulates.
The capture handler is the code that returns the image for display upon the user clicking the "Take Picture" button on the GUI.
GUI Development
Based on my understanding of computer science, I knew that the built-in camera feed had to be run from some interfacing software somewhere in the massive default project. At this point, I did not know that I wanted to develop my custom interface in HTML, but rather that I would just design my interface in the same method as the default one was implemented so that I would hopefully not run into any errors.
After doing some digging around, I saw that the HTML code for the default camera feed was stored in hex format in the camera_index.h file. I found the hex code for the default interface.

Once I had the hex that contained the binary representation of my HTML code, I replaced the default camera feed code in Arduino with my custom GUI. The replaced code was in the camera_index.h file.

It is important to redefine the length of the hex code variable. The length can be found in a text editor like Notepad++ or in CyberChef itself. When converting to hex, CyberChef will tell you the length which the length variable is set as.

The menu div acts as a container for all the input groups related to camera settings. Each setting (resolution, quality, brightness, contrast, saturation) is individually wrapped in a div with the class input-group.

When the "Camera Options" button is clicked, it toggles the visibility of the camera options menu.
Final Product
Upon launching the server on startup, this is what the interface looks like.
When the user clicks the "Take Picture" button, the image capture handler is called, which returns an image. The following image was captured in the lab of fellow student Connor Cruz.
The captured image is then displayed on the GUI.
Upon the user clicking "Take Picture", a new image is captured and displayed, ad infinitum.
Clicking the "Camera Options" button opens a popup menu that allows the user to control some of the camera's configurations.
Unfortunately, during this week, I didn't have time to actually implement the camera options config changing. I had some issues adapting the CameraWebServer config for camera settings to change when the options were changed in the GUI. This is something I hope to continue working on as I further develop my project.
