Invention, Intellectual Property, and Income

Individual Assignment

Task: Invention, Intellectual Property, and Business Models.

Dissemination Plan

The Kitten Mitten - Kitten Toy is a toy made for people who own cats, and need a distraction for them while they are trying to get things done, or if they need to rest and are unable to actively play with their cats. I know many cat owners who currently use a laser pointer as a means of playing with their cats. The act of using the laser pointer by itself typically involved standing, moving your arms around, and overall just being there and acitve with your kitten. One group that this toy could help is people with disabilities and are unable to be as involved as they would like in their cats play time. The Kitten Mitten will be programmable from your computer, so you can choose a random, "bug like" motion for the laser dot, adjust the speed, range of motion, etc. or you can connect a remote joystick to it and control it from the comfort of wherever your heart desires! (This feature will only be available if I find a suitable microcontroller and components to create the remote.)(A few days before deadline UPDATE: I was unable to find components that would be useful for the joystick component in a timely manner - I will not be able to include this feature on the first iteration of my toy design.)

I would use social media to share the information about my final project and use it as a platform to gain interest and potential business. Tik Tok is a huge platform for small and upcoming businesses to share their ideas and get feedback and orders from the public.

The license I chose is a Creative Commons Zero (CC0). This particular license means that I revoke my copyright and the work I produce and publish will be available for use in any fashion from the public. Part of why I chose this license is because a lot of the projects I quite enjoyed, used a similar license, and I think its inspiring when people have open-websites that anyone can use information from. I don't want to gatekeep information or make a profit for this; I want this to be a project anyone can pick up and try.

The license

From Adrian Torres's page on this weeks assignment, I was able to utilize the website he had linked, which helps someone figure out exactly which license they need for the work they are doing. Get help with Creative Commons.

Future Possibilities

To expand this project, I would add the remote joystick feature so you can control the laser dot live, from wherever you would like, within range of the microcontroller. To do this, I would need to select a microcontroller that supports communication to other boards, preferable over bluetooth or WiFi. Another future possibility is to remove the moving paw, and make the head the moveable feature. This would clean up the design a bit, and make it visually simpler. To do this, I would need to take the same idea I am using for the paw (attaching the servo to the inside side) and modify the design to fit the inside of the head. I would also likely have to split the head into two pieces that connect to each other, in order to access the electronic components within the head.

Slide

To design my slide, I will be using Canva on the web. I think Canva is one of the easiest design websites to use, as it has many features included in the free plan, but through my work, I have access to the paid plan on Canva, which includes a lot more features.

Video

I have very little experience shooting, compiling, and editing videos. I will be using Biteable to make a short video of my final project.
