Applications and Implications

Task for Week 16

Individual Assignment
Propose a final project masterpiece that integrates the range of units covered, answering:
  • What will it do?
  • Who's done what beforehand?
  • What will you design?
  • What materials and components will be used?
  • Where will it come from?
  • How much will they cost?
  • What parts and systems will be made?
  • What processes will be used?
  • What questions need to be answered?
  • How will it be evaluated?
  • Your project should incorporate 2D and 3D design, additive and subtractive fabrication processes, electronics design and production, embedded microcontroller interfacing and programming, system integration and packaging
  • Where possible, you should make rather than buy the parts of your project
  • Projects can be separate or joint, but need to show individual mastery of the skills, and be independently operable
  • What will it do?

  • Bhutan is still a developing country where maximum population owns/depends on farming. Every year farmers lose their crops to wild animals.According to our Local News, farmers in the country on average lose about 8.250 metric tonnes of crops worth Nu.171.75 million every year to the wild animals which is a lot in this small country. Hence safe guarding the crops seems to be one of the essential problems for the farmers. So I've come up with the idea to build a scare crow which will be easy to operate, user friendly, durable and cheap.
  • Who's done what beforehand?

  • There are lots of scarecrow online for sale. Most of them are to chase away birds. They are found in the online shopping sites.
  • Traces Traces"Source from Google"
  • Online link to find the Animal repellent where you can order for yourself. The sad part is that it is expensive and it takes time to get delivered in Bhutan.
  • Video Links where it compares some of the products online according to its function and price.
  • We have to using the traditional scarecrow in Bhutan which doesn't involve any electronics. It's just a stick figure with clothes on just to show some presence of Human in the field. This hasn't been much of a success to keep away the wild animals especially the boars.

    What will you Design?

  • There are three main components that I will work on.
  • 1. Design of Controller Board(My Final Project Board)
    - I'm going to use ATTINY1614 as MCU, the controller board for the scarecrow. The board will have connecter headers for PIR sensor, LDR sensor, SD card module and LEDs.
    1. Microcontroller Board- Will be using ATTINY1614 with 3 input pins and 3 output pins.
    2. Inputs Devices - PIR sensor to sense the motion of the Animals and LDR sensors to light up the scarecrow at night.
    3. Output Devices - Speaker with SD card module which will have animal sounds like dogs, lions, etc. Also LED lights which will be all around the body of the scarecrow.
    4. Power Source - Batteries and also Solar Panel.
    5. Wiring, switches and Connectors - All the electronics will be placed inside the head. The PIR sensor will be place in the Centre of all the three sides of the head and the LDR sensor will be placed on top of the Head. There will be a Switch to turn on the Power supply which will be placed on the surface of the any Face.
    6. Circuit Design and Fabrication - I'm using Eagle to Design my board and will be using Roland SRM20 for Milling my Board.
    2. Physical Fabrication
    1. Subtractive - The head of the scarecrow will be laser cut using ply. Also the tripod will be cut using Shopbot.
    2. Additive - Cover for the sensors will be print using the 3D printer.

What materials and components will be used?

    Materials Required and Price

    Sl.No Description Quantity Price(Nu) Total(Nu)
    1 ATTINY1614 1 80 80
    2 SD Card Module 1 180 180
    3 Speaker 1 300 300
    4 PIR sensor 3 160 480
    5 LDR sensor 1 20 20
    6 Audio Stereo Amplifier 1 360 360

    8 Filament 1 250 250
    Grand Total Nu.2320(USD 30)

    Where will it come from?

  • Will be buying most of the components through online shopping websites. Will be using plywood,PLA for 3D printing from the Lab along with some components like resistors, capacitors, etc from the lab.
  • How much will they cost?

  • The following parts and systems will be made in the lab:-
    1. PCB Board using ATTINY1614 using SRM20 Machine.
    2. Scarecrow Head using Laser cutter Machine.
    3. The cover of LDR using 3D Printer.
    4. Tripod(where the head of the scarecrow will be placed) using Shopbot.
