Week 17: Inventions, intellectual property and incomes

For this week we have the following individual assignments:

  1. Develop a plan for dissemination of your final project.
  2. Prepare drafts of your summary slide (1920x1080.png) and video(1080.mp4, 1 minute al less than 10Mb).

1.Develop a plan for dissemination of your final project?

As a Healthcare professional and researcher, my aim is to incorporate digital fabrication, trough frugal innovation, into the healthcare environment, to fill the gap that new technologies and real world data are creating. One of these needs is to start measuring objective and clinically significant variables in non-clinical settings, that can help healthcare professionals decision making. And one the most relevant variables, considered a biomarker (a variable that by itself can have a significant impact on health issues) is grip strenght.

That´s why i´ve designed P.R.E.S.S, a Personal REmote Strenght Support device, that permits the monitorization of Health from Home. Giving significant and usefull data from the Real World (RWD) that clinicians can use for the healthcare decision making.

Intellectual Property

In my case and like that of all Fab Academy students, all our work is backed by the MIT License, which is an Open Source initiative. Anyone who enters my website can use my documentation and files without restrictions.

As everything I do is for public use, in my case I particularly want to use a Creative Commons license. I specifically choose the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License, that you can see right below:

With this license, you are free to share and adapt, under the following terms: you must give appropiate credit (attribution), you may not use the material for commercial purposes (NonCommercial), and if you modify or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original (ShareAlike).

In the following link, responding very easily to a questionnaire gives you a result of the license that best suits your project.

Bussiness model

Regarding the business model, my aim is to develop a 100% functional device that meets patients needs related to streght measurement and follow-up from home. I actually belong to a research group called H.I.P.S (Health Innovation Patient Support) that works on three principles or pillars, to create innovative, patient centered solutions, to solve real health care problems. So my next steps are going to be to continue improving my device, after, to validate it´s measurement through a research project with patients, if possible in collaboration with any fablab interested ,as we beleive that research has to be collaborative, and also with the aim of applying for private or public funding. And finally, I´m also be very interested in exploring the possibilites of the distributed incubator that Neil has mentioned to us lately. So, definitely i´m going to have a lot of work, but at the same time excited for what there is to come!

Slide and video

Here you can check the slide and video:

SLIDE

Regarding the slide In order to create it, I have very little experience with Gimp or Canvas or Inkscape. All i´ve used them is to work with .svg and .png files during past assignments. After trying to understand how I could use them for my slide, I didn´t feel comfortable and the time needed to manage them well was going to be quite long. So, I edited my draft slide with powerpoint and after, as you can´t export it in the dimensions required (1920x1080) I exported it to Gimp and from there, changed to the desired size and exported it back again as .png file. It´s probably not the best way, but it works, and gives me time to edit the slide with powerpoint, a tool that I know and use frequently, helping my time management for this final days!

VIDEO

As fot the video, I really appreciate all the video compression and editing time spent that i´ve been doing during Fabacademy. To prepare the video, I used the windows image and video editing tool. it´s a very very simple program that helps you prepare your videos simply and quickly. So, after preparing the video, I exported it in the format required and compressed it with handbrake. The program i´ve been using to compress videos since the second assignment, as you can see in my documentation, having a pretty good success as I managed to compress a 217Mb file to a 9 Mb file with good quality.

I have to thank the Spanish regional Review that we have all tuesdays, because it helps us a lot when you share your experiences, failures and tips with other colleages that are in the same situation as you are. Not only for this week, but during all Fabacademy. So, thank you guys! Part of the success of this work is thanks to you. You really helped me in this assignment making me clearly see what was important to be in the video.
