16. Wildcard Week- Digital Sewing

# Goal:

Use a digital fabrication process that was not covered in any other assignment.Sew a digital design on a fabric using a digital sewing machine .

# Tasks:

1- Update a design created in the computer-aided design week.
2- Sew the design in a fabric using a digital sewing machine and Digitizer V5 Embroidery software.
3- Add a hoop wooden embroidery frame.

# Procedures:

This week engineer Salama gave us a workshop about digital sewing, where she explained the process and supervised us during the whole process. I started by using a logo designed in the computer-aided design week. Then, I used the Digitizer V5 Embroidery software and set up the Janome Horizon MC15000 digital sewing machine. After finishing the sewing process, I put my fabric in a hoop wooden frame.

a. Design and Setup:

I chose the hoop size, which is the FA10 100X40 hoop, and the fabric, which is leather. Moreover, I chose gold and purple threads with the leather. To set up the sewing machine, I started by fixing the fabric in the hoop-FA10 and ensuring the fabric is tight. Then, I placed the hoop in its place in the machine. After that, I selected the used hoop name in the software.

I exported the designed logo from Inkscape software. To open the design in the Digitizer V5 Embroidery software, I pressed "Auto-Digitize" and "Insert Artwork". Then, I reduced the size of the design to fit in the red square.

After that, I clicked on "Click-to-Fit" and selected the different parts of the design. On the right-hand side, the picture is showing the list of the parts and the order of sewing.

To transfer the digital design to the sewing machine, I clicked on "Link" then "Send".

b. Sewing Process:

Now, I inserted the thread in its required places. After the design appeared on the screen of the sewing machine, I press "Ok" to get all the details about the sewing process and the time.

At the beginning of this trial, the leather piece was easily sewed. Beside the thread cut offs, the process was going smoothly. However, the leather was loose when it was the time to sew the words. This yielded holes in the fabric, so the sewing process failed.

In the second trial, engineer Salama chose a felt fabric and cotton threads. I repeated the same steps above.

After the sewing process finished, I removed the fabric from the hoop and placed it in a hoop wooden embroidery frame.

# Challenges:
The main challenge I faced was keeping fixing the thread because it was cut off continuously.
