INPUT

In this assignment I had to:
* design and 3D print an object (small, few cm) that could not be made subtractively
* 3D scan an object (and optionally print it).

PROCESS

>>> PREPARING FILE TO PRINT
I made a little robot in SCULPTRIS.

I will use 2 3D PRINTERS: REPLICATOR 2X and UP

TIPS * In all cases you can rotate, scale and move the objet to find the correct position to print.
* In both cases you can choose between PLA or ABS.
* If you use ABS you will need to heat the platform.

ABS - Its strength, flexibility, machinability, and higher temperature resistance make it often a preferred plastic for engineers, and professional applications. The hot plastic smell deter some as does the plastics petroleum based origin. The additional requirement of a heated print bed means there are some printers simply incapable of printing ABS with any reliability.
PLA - The wide range of available colors and translucencies and glossy feel often attract those who print for display or small household uses. Many appreciate the plant based origins and prefer the semi-sweet smell over ABS. When properly cooled, PLA seems to have higher maximum printing speeds, lower layer heights, and sharper printed corners. Combining this with low warping on parts make it a popular plastic for home printers, hobbyists, and schools.

Using REPLICATOR 2X.
Using UP.

OUTPUT

>>> PRINTING
Using REPLICATOR 2X You can use ABS or PLA.
In both case I had problems with this 3d printer.
With this 3D printer you can use a SD card to take the file from the computer to the printer.
Using UP I used ABS in this case
This 3D printer need to connect directly to your computer using a usb cable.
Printing another robot.
FEEDBACK
* In my case I prefer to use UP 3D printer because it is one of the most compact printers and is easy to carry on to another places.
* As I work with children I suggest to use PLA because this is a non toxi material.

>>> TIME TO SCANNING
Using 3D SENSE You need to rotate and object or a person 360 degrees slowly.
I made a scan of my body. Here the results:

Using STRUCTURED LIGHT This experiment was made some years ago, when Fab Lab Lima started in Peru. Please visit 3d scanning using sctructured light for more info.

Using 123D CATCH. For me, this is the easiest way to scan, because you need only a phone camera and take several photos around one objet or person (360 degrees).
After that you will have to upload your pictures to its server and in some minute you will get the 3D MODEL. Visit 123D CATCH.
