About me

Marius' reduced IQ face

Hello! My name is Marius Araújo and this is my Fab Academy documentation website. This page will tell you about who I am and what I’m planning to do in Fab Academy

My background

I was born in Bruxels, Belgium, to a Portuguese dad and a German mom. I often forget it because I was raised in Évora, Portugal, where my first formative years took place. In 12th grade (highschool senior year) I was an exchange student in Hutchinson, Kansas, USA, and I think it was one of the greatest experiences a teenager can have. After that I attended a 3 year multimedia technical course, had a failed attempt at a Computer Science engineering degree, moved on to a 10 month practicum as a photographers apprentice in Berlin, Germany, followed by a 3 year Ba in Computer Animation and Visualization in Bournemouth, UK.

Since then, I have worked at the University of Évora’s Arts School as support staff helping students in such subjects as photography, computer modeling and 3d printing, video editing and other multimedia related subjects.

I’ve always been torn between the technical and the artistic. I think I gathered competences in my life that complement each other and I could apply in my current job at the Arts School. Yet, it’s been 15 years and I feel ready to learn more, expand and diversify.

Attending Fab Academy at FCT FABLAB, I hope to learn all the things proposed in this years programme, in order become a padawan Fab Manager at a new creative lab / makerspace we’re setting up at the Arts School. I really hope this is the spark to ignite the powder barrel of future projects.

I’ve been interested in materializing and making for so long, I hope I can now learn the tools for a new phase in my life, helping others materialize their dreams as well.

In 2024 I was accepted at Fab Lab León as a remote student, in order to do many last touches to my documentation and final project, and finish Fab Academy.

I had gotten to know Adrián Torres as a colleague in 2020, and later as instructor in the Global Open Time sessions, on saturdays, and felt confident he and Pablo Nuñez, also instructor at León, could help me finish my final project electronics, which had been my biggest hurdle to cross.
