Krita and Inkscape vectorization Tutorial

A lil' introduction

Krita is like photoshop, but free and open source. You can easily manipulate images with it, and I’ll show you how.

Inkscape is like Illustrator, but free and open source also. You can use it to draw or to manipulate images. I usually use it to do vectorization.

I’ll use as an example an image I think I'm gonna use in my final project. I want to do a bug, based on the one Grace Hopper found inside her computer (and reason why we talk about a “bug” when there’s a problem with our computers).

I have the image, but I have to clean it just to save the bug in it, and vectorize it.

Step 1 : install Krita

Here is the link to download it : https://krita.org/fr/

and a link to its documentation : https://docs.krita.org/en/user_manual/

Step 2 : open your file

Like most of the software, you just have to click in file > open file and voilà ! :)

Up until now it’s a piece of cake ^^

Step 3 : erase unuseful elements

To help you, you can use the same tool as in photoshop : the magic wand. It will make you win some time and select a lot of the background at the same time.

Once it’s done, you just have to press your “delete” button to erase what’s selected.

I won’t need all that document, so to win some time I can also crop what I don’t need. In order to do so, press the “C” on your keyboard to open the tool. Now I just have to crop what I don’t need.

Now it’s time to clean our moff and clip it ! Thanks to the magic wand tool, you can select the areas you want to delete.

Step 4 : vectorize your image

To vectorize our image, first we have to open it in Inkscape.

I did a tutorial on Inkscape, if you want to know how to install it and learn the basics of the interface.

In order to do it, you have to go to path > vectorize a matricial object.

A panel opens. There you can play with the different parameters to adjust the vectorization to your will.

I played with the luminosity, put it in 0.650. Here’s the result !
