FINAL PROJECT DISSEMINATION | LICENSING

WEEK 19: INVENTION, INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY, AND INCOME

  • In context of licensing final project, I have studied few license provider platform such as Creative commons, MIT license, GNU General Public License, and Apache License.
  • Below is brief understanding each one of above license providing bodies.
  • MIT License
  • As permissive license, it puts only very limited restriction on reuse and has, therefore, an excellent license compatibility
  • MIT licensed software can be integrated into GPL software, but not the other way around.
  • The MIT license permits reuse within proprietary software provided that all copies of the licensed software include a copy of the MIT License terms and the copyright notice.
  • Creative Commons
  • A Creative Commons (CC) license is used when an author wants to give people the right to share, use, and build upon a work that they have created.
  • CC provides an author flexibility (for example, they might choose to allow only non-commercial uses of their own work) and protects the people who use or redistribute an author's work from concerns of copyright infringement as long as they abide by the conditions that are specified in the license by which the author distributes the work

ASSIGNMENT :

  • Develop a plan for dissemination of your final project
  • Prepare drafts of your summary slide (presentation .png, 1920x1080) and video clip (presentation.mp4, 1080p HTML5, < ~minute, < ~10 MB) and put them in your root directory
  • GNU General Public License (GPL)
  • GNU GPL is a widely used free software license, which guarantees end users the freedom to run, study, share and modify the software.
  • The GPL is a copyleft license, which means that derivative work can only be distributed under the same license terms.
  • Official page of GNU GPL is here
  • Apache License
  • The Apache License, Version 2.0 requires preservation of the copyright notice and disclaimer.
  • Like other free software licenses, the license allows the user of the software the freedom to use the software for any purpose, to distribute it, to modify it, and to distribute modified versions of the software, under the terms of the license, without concern for royalties.
  • Official page of  Apache license 2.0

My final project License

  • After reviewing and understanding various license and its implication with respect to my project I have decided to take license under Creative Commons (CC) BY -SA.
  • My reasoning to go with CC BY -SA is as below:
  • This license lets others remix, tweak, and build upon your work non-commercially, and although their new works must also acknowledge you and be non-commercial, they don’t have to license their derivative works on the same terms.
  • I prefer to take Attribution ShareAlike license, as I want my work to be improved in future, and allows creator to give freedom to work upon and change in a way they want.
  • Because from other’s work also I will have chance to learn more and make system mature. Also I don't mind to use is for commercial purpose as long as reasonable credit is given to me.

Key feature of Creative Commons

  • Attribution : BY
  • As permissive license, it puts only very limited restriction on reuse and has, therefore, an excellent license compatibility
  • MIT licensed software can be integrated into GPL software, but not the other way around.
  • The MIT license permits reuse within proprietary software provided that all copies of the licensed software include a copy of the MIT License terms and the copyright notice.
  • Share alike : SA
  • Licensees may distribute derivative works only under a license identical ("not more restrictive") to the license that governs the original work.
  • Without share-alike, derivative works might be sub-licensed with compatible but more restrictive license clauses, e.g. CC BY to CC BY-NC.)
  • Non commercial: NC
  • Licensees may copy, distribute, display and perform only verbatim copies of the work, not derivative works and remix based on it.
  • No derivatives works: ND
  • Licensees may copy, distribute, display, and perform the work and make derivative works and remixes based on it only for non-commercial purposes.

Process of Acquiring License

  • As Acquiring CC license is very easy and fast 2 step process, once we select which license we want to take, which are as below.
  • First one has to go on CC website. And to answer 2 basic question based on we want to make it share alike, commercial or non commercial commercial.
  • After that it shows respective CC license.
  • After that we may link license to our individual page by adding URL.
  • And that's it, we can link embed license on our website with given code at last.
  • My license can be seen at bottom of this page.

Future possibilities and plan for my final project

  • Here I am outlining my final project future development possibilities and how it can be  executed in real time.
  • Project display & exhibition
  • I am planning to showcase my final project into CEPT end semester exhibition 2018. CEPT University is quite a good name in my region and it gather quality people in this exhibition. This year management is planning to exhibit Fab Academy projects at CEPT Exhibition.
  • Utilization
  • At this stage I am not planning to make complete product and sale it in market, but my idea is to use it for further research in 3d printing material. Also I want it make useful by FabLab users and CEPT researcher who wants to research in the field of new materials.
  • For future also I am planning to call local plastic manufacturer and extrusion machine makers to discuss and utility of the project for manufacturing.
  • Development
  • For further development of machine I am planning to make mechanism sturdy and at bigger scale where flow-rate of extrusion will be high.
  • Funding
  • As my intention to use this project for material research, I am planning to apply for funding from CEPT University, where I am working currently.
