Week 12

Composites - April, 22nd 2015

Reviewing The Design

The task this week was to learn, and build a piece from new materials, composites.
I first took the design that has been done for week 9, the lips, which will be part of my final project and then divide the mesh.
As the design required high definition on its surface, I reversed its position. Besides, I had to resize it a few times because my height limit was 10cm due to the thickness of the polyurethane block.

Setting The Parameters Precix CNC Machine

In RhinoCAM there are two strategies to be followed, two codes: one for roughing (chop excess polyurethane block) and one for finishing (give detail to piece).
I created a 50x50x7cm block (available measurements of polyurethane block), and within that block even set the two parts would be cut in a manner that milling was continued work.

Strategies

Roughing:
1- Speed 100 RPM
2- Ball Mill 12mm
3- Feed Rates 10.000 mm/min
4- Stepover Control 50% of the diameter of the drill

Finishing: 1- Speed 100 RPM 2- Ball Mill 6mm 3- Feed Rates 7.000 mm/min 4- Stepover Control 25% of the diameter of the drill

Milling

With the polyurethane block correctly in the machine first I had to insert the drill 12mm for the first strategy, roughing and made the adjustments of the axes X , Y and Z.
After preparation finally the process began.

Milling

With the polyurethane block ready, I went to the preparation of the third part of the process.
With a stylus separated it into two parts, I lined the pieces with pvc and prepared the resin and hardener (50% each).
The mixture should be done quickly but carefully. It's kind of messy, and you have only 25 minutes between mixing, applying the layers of Burlap, plastic and place the piece in the vacuum machine.

Done

Unfortunately in my hurry to finish the job, I didn't mixed resin well, which made the upper lip not completely dried up, and as a result, the piece came out with bubbles.
