Applications and Implications
What will it do?
The project is an interactive storytelling device which uses the illustrated story rolls and puppet to narrate the story. For playing the story, user has to insert certian story card, which unfolds the stories frame by frame with audio. To reinterpret and bring back the warmth of traditional storytelling forms like crankie and puppetry into a contemporary interactive object.
Who's done what beforehand?
I was interested in storytelling and exploring different mediums to deliver it. I was drawn towards traditional forms like puppetry, which are slowly fading.
For the puppet-making side, I explored automata mechanisms, puppet movements, string puppets, and marionette systems to understand how character motion.
Crankie storytelling is another form of visual storytelling where illustrated story scrolls move between rollers while narration and music happen along with the visuals.

I also found a Facebook video on an electric crankie system, even though I could not fully understand the mechanism, i have linked it in.

AI Prompt Used:
give code for a responsive HTML section that embeds a Facebook video and a YouTube Shorts video side by side , aligned properly.
For my first story, I am creating a sloth character inspired by the calm and slow nature of sloths. I referred to different children's books and visual references based on sloths, especially The Sloth Who Came to Stay, to understand storytelling style, character emotion, and visual presentation. I also referred Pinterest for sloth illustrations.
I collected some inspo for the form designing of the enclosure from pinterest. I wanted to it be whimiscal, playful form for my product.

What sources will you use?
The project will mainly use the components and materials available in the inventory at Super Fablab Kerala, along with the machines and production facilities available in the lab. The project will also be developed with guidance and technical support from instructors, mentors, and help of peers.
- 3d modeling: fusion360
- PCB design: Kicad
- Programming: Arduino IDE
- For documentation, slide and video: Visual studio Code, Notion, Figma, canva and VN video editor
- AI: Chatgpt, claude ai
- Illustration for story board: Procreate
- Illustration Refrence and moodboard: Pinterest,Yanko design
- Youtube tutorials
- Fabacademy student's previous year documentations
- Datasheets for electronic parts
What will you design?
I have to design pretty much everything - physical, mechanical, electronic, and interactive systems for the final storytelling device prototype.
The system is modular, with the puppet and crankie designed as separate units connected using the I2C protocol.
I will design the mechanism for the story roll using a stepper motor, GT2 closed-loop belt, and GT2 pulley system.
A slot sensor will be used to detect the starting and ending of story frames, and NTAG-based story cards will be used for reading specific stories.
Servo motors will control the puppet or narrator movements.
The project also includes PCB design, character design, storyboard creation, story presentation flow, and audio creation for the storytelling experience.
What materials and components will be used, Where will come from and How much will they cost?
What parts and systems will be made?
- The project includes making the story roll movement and rewind mechanism, puppet motion mechanism, enclosure, story cards, storyboard, puppet characters, storytelling audio and mounts for electronic components.
- The electronic system will include a custom PCB, microcontroller, NFC/NTAG reader, stepper motor system, servo motor control, LEDs, audio module, speaker, charging system, and sensors.
- The firmware and interaction system for syncing audio, story roll movement, lighting, and puppet actions will also be developed.
What processes will be used?
- 3D printing will be used for making some enclosure parts and small components. CNC milling will be used for the main enclosure body.
- Story illustrations will be drawn on story sheet using M1 Ultra, and Zund cutter will be used for cutting the story rolls.
- The PCB will be made using the Roland milling machine, and the electronic components and wires will be connected through soldering.
Final assembly and testing will be done by integrating all the mechanical, electronic, and interactive systems together.
What questions need to be answered?
- First of all, Does it work when i on the device?
- Will it sync properly - audio, character motion, story roll?
- Is the story engaging?
- Does the modular parts connecting properly?
- Does the story card insertion works, and will it reads the right story?
How will it be evaluated?
- The both module should communicating properly
- The story roll mechansim should be rolling according to the frame timing and rewinding at the end.
- The slot sensor should detect the frame end and starting.
- Synchronization of audio, character motion, story roll.
- The nfc reader reading the story card inserted.

Making Draft for Presentation Slide
This week, we need to create draft of presentation slide. For that used figma, as in figma you can use custom fonts in free version. For now i just craeted a frame size 1920x1080 and added heading.
I made heading using Text tool, used font as "Bagel Fat One" and font size as 96.
For exporting the frame, select the frame and on right panel >> In export section, select png >> export as presentation.png and pushed to repo.
For final presentation slide i'm planning to add the product prototype image, render image. Also showcasing the modular parts, one is crankie and other is puppet. Adding features and components used in and Fablab logo, license logo.
Making Draft for Presentation Video
Requirement: video clip(presentation.mp4, 1080p HTML5, < ~minute, < ~25 MB),
For the video editing draft, i used the VN video editing app on my phone and i'm fimilar with it. For now, i did basic trim, speed, split, zoom in operations and exported them.
HandBrake is being used for video compression. Our instructor sent us a preset(saved set of settings for video compression) template, which we imported into HandBrake.
