5. 3D Scanning and printing

This week I worked on learning about 3D scanning and 3D printing

3D printing

To start the week, we had a lab and our professors did an example of how to print and we did our own group prints. Me and Damian did a print of a skull, we got the design from the printables website. The group work is documented on the link at the bottom of this page. For my idea for the project this week, I decided to do a hollow ring with something in it. I ended up putting screw nuts in it. You wouldn't be able to do this subtractively since I put the nuts in it before the ring was finished printing. I designed the ring in Fusion by making a circle and adding a hole in the middle. Then I used the shell tool to make the inside hollow. Then I exported it as a 3mf file to Prusa slicer. While in Prusa I added a pause so that I could add the nuts before it closed.

3D scanning

I used the Polycam app on my phone to 3d scan a stapler. I used the auto mode so that it would take photos on its own. I took around 40 photos and then uploaded them so it would make an image. After processing it made a mediocre 3d scan but I think it’s because I didn’t include enough photos.
