SLA 3D Printer Slicing Parameters
Summary
This week, I explored the SLA (Stereolithography) 3D printing process using a Formlabs SLA printer in the lab. I learned about the different stages of SLA printing, including slicing, printing, and post-processing techniques such as washing and curing. This process involved hands-on experience with resin-based 3D printing and measuring the tolerance of the printed object.

Work Process Detail
Understanding the SLA Printer
- We began by familiarizing ourselves with the Formlabs SLA printer by reading the machine's documentation on the official website.
- We researched various testing parameters and designs suitable for SLA printing, and we chose a specific model as shown in the pictures.

Preparing the Print
- We logged into the Formlabs account and installed the PreForm software on the PC.
- Using the software, we sliced the 3D model at a layer height of 0.05 mm.
- We used gray resin as the printing material and calculated that the print would take approximately 1 hour and 22 minutes.

Printing and Post-Processing
- After waiting for the print to finish, we proceeded with the post-processing steps.
- We removed the support material from the printed object.

Curing Process
- we placed the print in the washing machine filled with ethanol for 5 minutes to remove excess resin.
- After washing, we placed the print in the curing machine for another 5 minutes to ensure the resin was fully hardened.
- Finally, we measured the tolerance of the printed object to verify its accuracy.

Learning Outcome
Through this process, I gained valuable experience with SLA 3D printing, including the critical steps of post-processing such as washing and curing. I learned the importance of accurately slicing the model and setting the correct layer height for optimal results. Additionally, I developed an understanding of how resin-based 3D printing differs from FDM printing, especially in terms of precision and the need for careful handling during post-processing. This experience has provided me with insights into the benefits and challenges of working with SLA technology.
