Machine Know-how

Hero Shot

Summary

At the beginning of the week, we had a session with the local instructor to learn about the Roland SRM-20, a CNC milling machine used for precision cutting and PCB milling. We explored its hardware, software, and setup procedures, including how to mount the cutting plate, select and secure the end mills, and properly prepare the machine for operation. This documentation details the step-by-step process followed to understand and operate the machine effectively.

Work Process Detail

Learning Outcome

1. Understanding the Roland SRM-20 CNC Machine

  • We started by discussing the Roland SRM-20 milling machine, its features, and capabilities.
  • The machine is primarily used for milling circuit boards, engraving, and precision cutting.

2. Learning About the Machine’s Software

  • The software interface was introduced, showing how to load designs, set tool paths, and configure milling operations.
  • We explored the available file formats that are compatible with the machine.

3. Understanding the Cutting Plate and Work Area

  • The machine has a high-density plastic sacrificial plate placed under the material being cut to protect the bed.
  • We learned how to mount the plate securely using screws to prevent movement during milling.

4. Learning About End Mills and Their Specifications

  • We studied different end mill types and sizes for different cutting applications.
  • Two types were introduced:

1/64-inch diameter end mill – Used for fine PCB traces and detailed engraving.

1/32-inch diameter end mill – Used for cutting wider traces or deeper engravings.

5. Securing and Mounting the End Mill

  • The end mill needs to be properly placed inside the collet to ensure a stable and precise cut.
  • We learned how to tighten the collet screw securely to hold the end mill in place.

6. Preparing the Machine Bed

  • Ensuring the machine bed is level and stable is critical for accuracy.
  • We used tightening screws to fix the plate firmly and prevent movement.

Learning Outcome

1️⃣ Gained knowledge of the Roland SRM-20 CNC machine, including its capabilities, software, and applications.

2️⃣ Understood the role of the high-density cutting plate and how to secure it properly.

3️⃣ Learned about different end mill sizes and their applications, particularly 1/64-inch and 1/32-inch end mills for precision milling.

4️⃣ Practiced mounting and securing end mills to ensure accurate cutting and avoid tool slippage.

5️⃣ Properly stabilized the machine bed using tightening screws to improve milling accuracy.
