CNC Machining

I was presented with a challenge by my fourth grade class to create a plant stand for their class plant so I explored CNC Machining by using the CNC Shark Next Wave Router. Assignment: Design, mill, and assemble something big (~meter-scale).Extra credit: Avoid using fasteners or glue.

CNC Shark Next Wave: Specifications

Specifications:

Working Area: Varies by model (e.g., HD510: 25" x 25", HD520: 28" x 63")

Spindle Compatibility: Works with standard routers like Dewalt, Bosch, and Next Wave’s water-cooled spindle

Material Compatibility: Wood, plastics, and soft metals

Software: VCarve, Aspire, or similar CAD/CAM software

Control System: USB interface, operated via Shark Control Panel

Power: Standard 110V (USA models)

Beginner's Guide to Operating the CNC Shark Next Wave:

1. Safety First

Wear safety glasses and hearing protection.

Secure loose clothing and tie back hair.

Keep hands clear of moving parts.

Ensure the work area is well-ventilated.

2. Setting Up Your CNC

Secure the machine to a stable surface to minimize vibrations.

Attach the router to the CNC mount securely.

Install the correct bit based on your material and cut type.

Secure the workpiece using clamps or vacuum hold-downs.

3. Preparing Your Design

Use VCarve/Aspire to create your design.

Select the correct toolpath settings (feeds, speeds, depth of cut).

Generate G-code and load it onto the CNC software.

4. Running the CNC Machine

Zero the machine: Set the home position (X, Y, Z) using the control panel.

Run a test cut: Use a small scrap piece first.

Monitor the cut: Stay nearby to stop the machine if needed.

Post-processing: Sand and finish the cut parts as needed.
