Machine week Fab
Lab Vestmannaeyjar and Fab
Lab Reykjavík
group assignment
- design a machine that includes mechanism+actuation+automation+application
-
build the mechanical parts and operate it manually
- document the group project and your individual contribution
This week was a collaboration between Fab Lab Reykjavík and Fab Lab Vestmannaeyja. Me and my instructor took the ferry to travel to Fab Lab Reykjavík.
Our team consisted of :
María Fönn Frostadóttir (ME)
Gabríella Kamí Árnadóttir
Róbert Hreiðar Pálsson
Together we devided our tasks and worked together to reach our goal
The Process
Friday- Brainstorming
So from the beginning we were determined on using something with either just an x or a xy plane. The idea was to use the TeaManator as inspiration. We wanted to use the same single plane motion and get some use out of it. We began brainstorming and we wanted something that could be fun. We all gathered in a discord call and tried to think of fun uses for it. After a little while it was like a gigantic lightbulb had appeared over our heads. Eureka. We had it.
We were going to create a hot dog saucing machine.
Turns out we were not the first people in the world to have this idea. Here is a link to a different machine someone else made:

For the pump we used a 3D print we found online 3D PRINTED PERISTALTIC PUMP
We arrived on 2. april. We went straight to the FabLab and got to work.
Box
Gabriella drew the original box, the design was largely based on the TeaManator. The drawing was set up through TinkerCad and unfortunately we could not figure out a way to export it for a laser cutter.Maria began trying to redraw it through Blender and FreeCad but eventually decided to simply do it through Inkscape.
Blender (issue= I have no idea how to do finger joints through blender)
Freecad (did not manage to flatten it the way I hoped)
Inkscape chaos. It took a long time but I measured the thickness of the material
thickness: 0,3cm
The rest of the measurements I got from
Gabriella :)
The process was simple: I made a bunch of small same size boxes, used the material thickness and overused the difference and union tool.
IMPORTANT NOTE! TURN OFF ALL OUTLINES
BEFORE YOU PUT IN THE MEASUREMENTS!!!!!!
The parameters did not turn out perfect and the bottom part was a bit too big but we made it work.
Hot dog stand
The hot dog holder was designed by me and sculpted through Blender.Link for blender file
I started by drawing up the tomato. I wanted it to not look perfectly round so I mostly used the sculpt tool.
I used the bool tool to make the bottom smooth, by putting a cube to the bottom of the design and using the difference feature
I then printed it in 3 different parts through Prusa :3
result:
Logo
Then I took a screenshot of the sculpted tomato and pasted it into krita, where I used the bucket tool to fill it in, then i pasted that into inkscape and used the trace bitmap tool. Then I added eyes and a half circle and boom we had our beautiful logo.
The decorations
I was also in charge of the decorations and made the stickers, I designed them on Krita and screenshotted them and put them into Inkscape, I then used the trace bitmap tool to put the ketchup stains and letters into a vector format. I used the break appart tool and resized themStickers pdf
