Week 7 : Computer controlled machine (CNC)
Safety
Safety consideration are very important when using a CNC machine. Here are some things to take into consideration before using the CNC machine:
- Secure Workpieces: Properly secure workpieces/material using clamps, screws, or other appropriate fixtures to prevent them from moving during machining.
- Emergency Stop: Be aware of the location and operation of the emergency stop button. Be prepared to use it if there is any unexpected situation or danger.
- Supervision: Never leave the CNC machine unattended while it is running. Stay vigilant and monitor the machining process to address any issues promptly.
- Fire Prevention: Take proactive measures to prevent fires by keeping the work area clean and free of flammable materials such as chips, dust,… -> use a vacuum during machining to remove all the chips and dust. Regularly clean the machine and surrounding area.
- Fire blanket: In our fablab we also have a fire blanket: they are rapid and easy to use, and are a good solution for small fire. Use: first open the window, take the blanket by covering our hands and wrists, and put the blanket on the fire.
- Fire Extinguisher: Know the place of the fire extinguisher, and how to use it. In our fablab, we have a CO2 extinguisher: they are preferred in CNC environments because they leave no residue after deployment. Unlike water or foam extinguishers, CO2 does not cause damage to sensitive electronic components or machinery.
