Background¶
When I completed the weekly assignment for Week10 “Mechanical Design, Machine Design” in Fab Academy, I used a clear acrylic board to cut out some machine components. Also, I saw a considerable number of MDF boards in my workplace, which still had huge open space for laser-cutting. I wondered how to utilize the existing resources before dumping them as waste.
Meanwhile, I applied for the Fab City Challenge 2024 and was selected as a team member to work for crafting in the jungle in Chiapas, Mexico. For a couple of months before the Challenge kickoff in July, I spend time learning about the area, and started wondering if there could be a way to use Quetzal, legendary birds in the Maya community, as a character for designing products.
Combining clear acrylic board and MDF boards, I decided to make a bedside LED night lamp, adding a blue LED tape. Blue light is said to help us go to sleep at night. I thought it would be a good interior item.
Design¶
I first prepared the data for cutting the acrylic board with Adobe Illustator. Based on this data, I cut the board with a laser-cutter.
Next, I prepared the data for the base. For this, I thought of making it look like a pyramid, which is another feature for Mexico. There is a famous archeological heritage site, Palenque, in Chiapas, too. So, I first designed the triangular prism and slice it into a few layers by Tinkercad.
Then I proceeded to laser-cutting and assembly.
As soon as the ordered LED tape was delivered, I placed the tape in the ditch inside the base and then placed the acrylic board on it.
I could complete the assembly before I left for Fab City Challenge in July.
