Week 19 - Invention, Intellectual property and Income

What tasks have been completed?

  • 3D modeling and scripting in Grasshopper.
  • Generation of CNC files for milling.
  • Fabrication of the physical table structure.
  • Implementation of capacitive touch reading functionality.
  • What tasks remain?

  • Finishing the capacitive touch sensors.
  • Adding RGB lights and integrating a speaker with the SAMD11 microcontroller.
  • Arranging and securing cables and boards within the table.
  • Potentially performing additional CNC milling for carpentry finishes.
  • Preparing the final video and presentation.
  • What has worked and what hasn't?

    Worked:

  • The table itself is resistant and well shaped.
  • Neopixel LED strips.
  • Capacitive touch sensor pads
  • SAMD21 main development pcb board
  • Stopped working:

  • I2C connection with second SAMD21 microcontroller board
  • 3D printed case for electronics broke
  • Could improve:

  • Slots for touch pads are too big
  • System integration in general
  • Questions that need to be resolved

  • How to optimally integrate and secure the additional electronic components without compromising the table's aesthetics and functionality?
  • What finishing techniques should be applied to the table to enhance its durability and appearance?
  • How to achieve seamless interaction between the capacitive touch sensors, RGB lights, and speaker?
  • What will happen when?

  • May 8th: Focus on finalizing table finishes.
  • May 15th: Complete the integration of electronics 1 & 2.
  • May 22nd: Finish electronics 3 and decide on the final finishing touches.
  • May 29th: Detail the project and prepare the final presentation.
  • June 5th, 7th, 10th, 12th: Final presentations of the project.
  • What have you learned?

  • The importance of precise 3D modeling and scripting for accurate CNC milling.
  • Effective integration of electronic components in a wooden structure requires careful planning and testing.
  • Iterative testing and user feedback are crucial for refining interactive features like touch sensors and lighting.
  • Balancing aesthetics, functionality, and durability is key in designing interactive furniture.
