About Me

Hi! I am Megan Round. I am an assistant technician at XLAB Bangor, Bangor University. I originally did my degree in Primary Education but quickly specialized in teaching STEM.

I have always enjoyed traditional crafts such as sewing and knitting, but once I was introduced to technology like 3D printers and laser cutters, I was hooked with the number of things I could now create.

Previous projects

To begin with my projects centered around standard craft, however about 2 years ago I was introduced to 3D printing, and I bought a secondhand Prusa MK3s and I started learning how to model.

Having been working at XLAB Bangor for over a year I have learnt to use a wide variety of machines such as laser cutting/engraving and various computer-controlled processes.

I often help other people make projects as part of XLAB. You can see projects at our instagram @discover_xlab.

Neon Strip Lighting

I came across this video by bigclivedotcom who showed off using neon strip lighting to make effective neon signs. He shared an open scad file and I made some.

I then decided to make my own version with 3D modelled and printed parts. I was still inexperienced in modelling, so the parts were just draw out of splines and then trial and error to make sure everything fitted.

The most recent version I made for a friend who is a big duck lover. I modelled the necessary channels this time knowing how offset a line so that it was the correct width. I then separated it into layers which I laser cut and then glued, sanded, and varnished.
