Molding and Casting
Review the safety data sheets for each of your molding and casting materials, then make and compare test casts with each of them.
Silicone

Epoxy resin (part material)

It's a bi component polymer, that you should mix gently before pouring in to the mold until it hardens.

You put component A and component B, in proportions 1:1 in weight.

The safety data sheet:

  1. Health and Safety Epoxy resin systems may cause sensitization by skin contact or inhalation may be corrosive, harmful or toxic.
  2. It is therefore strongly recommended that skin and eye contact is avoided by the using of appropriate personal protective equipment such as gloves, safety glasses or goggles and overalls.
  3. Wash any contamination from the skin immediately and thoroughly and do not eat, smoke or drink in the working vicinity. Under normal working conditions a good source of ventilation is adequate, however if the material is heated then local exhaust ventilation (LEV) may be required especially for curing ovens.

Silicone rubber (mold material)

Same procedure of the Epoxy Resin, 2 components, mix gently and put proportions 1:1 in weight.

There are no safety issues, because this material is intended to make molds for bakery and other stuff that are not harmful for human use. No toxicity. Produce no fumes and don't harm your skin if you touch it.

Machinable Wax (mold material and prototypes)

It is a mixture between paraffin-HDPE (High Density Polyethylene is a polyethylene thermoplastic made from petroleum).

To make the mixture, you have to melt the paraffin at a low temperature and add HDPE in 3:1 proportions. Once it is homogenized, let the mixture cool down in molds.... So you can machine it afterwards.

  1. Highly flammable, description of first aid measures If inhaled: Move the person into fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration.
  2. In case of skin contact: Wash off with soap and plenty of water. In case of eye contact: Flush eyes with water as a precaution.
  3. If swallowed: Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. Rinse mouth with water. Most important symptoms and effects, both acute and delayed.
  4. Extinguishing media Suitable extinguishing media: Use water spray, alcohol-resistant foam, dry chemical or carbon dioxide. Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture Nature of decomposition products not known.
  5. Advice for firefighters: Wear self-contained breathing apparatus for firefighting if necessary.
