6. 3D Scanning and Printing¶
This week Hero shot!¶
This week Checklist¶
Group assignment
- [✓] Test the design rules for our 3D printer
- [✓] Document our work and explain what are the limits of our printer
- [✓] Document our work to the group work page and reflect on my page what I learned
Individual assignment
- [✓] Design and 3D print an object (small, few cm3, limited by printer time) that could not be easily made subtractively
- [✓] 3D scan an object, try to prepare it for printing (and optionally print it)
Group assignment¶
This week, our group will try to use the 3D printer and test the design rules, also explaining the limits of our 3D printer. Please click here to see more details of our group assignment.
Individual assignment¶
I will try to design and 3D print an object that could not be easily made subtractively and try to 3D scan an object.
Design and 3D print an object¶
The following conditions have been made in the design according to the limit of the 3D printer
- The gap between the rings is narrow and arc-shaped, that could not be easily made subtractively (Differences between Additive and Subtractive Manufacturing)
- All dimensions including gaps are set with parameters for easy revision
- No overhanging part over 45 degrees
▼ Let’s start design the 3D ring! The first step is sketch with parameter.
▼ Use Revolve tool to build 3D ring, it’s really easy.
▼ Export all body to STL format file.
▼ Use slicing software gen a gcode file from STL file, and save to micro SD card.
There is my settings for Cura:
- Layer Height: 0.15mm
- Initial Layer Height: 0.3mm
- Wall Thickness: 0.8mm
- Top/Bottom Thickness: 0.9mm
- Infill Density: 0%
- Print Temperature: 185C
- Build Plate Temperature: 55C
- Print Speed: 50mm/s
- Initial Layer Speed: 18mm/s
▼ This is the 3D Printer I use - Creality Ender-3 V2
Technical specifications
- Modeling Technology: FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling)
- Printing Size: 220x220x250mm
- Printing Speed: 30-60mm/s
- Filament: 1.75mm PLA, ABS, TPU, PETG, etc.
- Nozzle Diameter: Standard 0.4mm, can be in 0.2, 0.3 mm
- Printing Precision: ±0.1mm
- Bed Temp.: ≤110℃
▼ Insert a micro SD card (include gcode file) to the 3D printer.
▼ We need to load the filament, please choose Prepare and PreheatPLA.
▼ Cut the filament diagonally.
▼ Insert filament inside the hole, until a little bit resistant.
▼ Turn the handle of the extruder until hotend spilled filament.
▼ Press Auto home to move X Y Z Asix to Zero.
▼ Let’s Print the file now!
▼ After printing, use the tool to take out the ring.
▼ My first attempt failed, because the ring gap was too close, all rings fastened together.
▼ So I need to change the parameter ring_gap from 0.4mm to 0.6mm and print it out again.
▼ Great! second attempt successfully printed a smooth moving ring.
3D scan and object¶
▼ I try many 3D scanner apps in iOS App Store, Qlone 3D Scanner is the best in my opinion, click here for more details.
▼ Qlone has two methods to scan, first is using a mat, help the scanner to be positioned accurately. Also, you can choose no mat and calculate on the cloud.
▼ Let’s start 3D scan!
▼ Just place the object in the middle of the mat and Qlone AR dome will guide you through the scanning process.
▼ This is scanning result.
▼ Qlone has some tools to help fine tune the scaned object.
▼ Qlone support export to popular 3D formats for use in other 3D tools/projects - OBJ, STL, etc…
▼ This is the printed result.
Summarize¶
After this week learning and practice, I understand advantages and limitations of 3D printing.
Advantages
- Infinite Geometry and Shapes
- Rapid Prototyping
- Easy to Access
- Reduced Waste
limitations
- Overhang (without support)
- Printing Angle (without support)
- Quality and consistency
- Use much time
- Restricted Build Size
Finally, the following video condenses my process from design, 3D modeling, slicing and print out.
Hope you all enjoy 3D modeling too!
