13. Applications and implications

Propose a final project masterpiece that integrates the range of units covered.

Your project should incorporate:

  • 2D and 3D design
  • Additive and subtractive fabrication processes
  • Electronics design and production
  • Microcontroller interfacing and programming
  • System integration and packaging.

Where possible, you should make rather than buy the parts of your project. Projects can be separate or joint, but need to show individual mastery of the skills, and be independently operable.

What will it do?

My project will be an exhibition module of the different works carried out in the course. This exhibition module will have rotation axes so that the exhibition object can be viewed in all its angles. When the observer approaches the exhibition module, it will begin to rotate and background music will also turn on.

Who’s done what beforehand?

There are many modules or exhibition furniture but most are designed to use light to focus on the objects on display. There are few works that integrate movement and sound. The mechanical system will be inspired by the group work Mechanical and machine design kinetic window

What will you design?

I will design the support module. I will design the turning mechanism and the turning axis. I will design the program to control the motor using a microcontroller to achieve the movement described above.

What materials and components will be used?

For the structure of the module and panels, MDF will be used. Wood will be used for the exhibit objects. Acrylic will be used for the movement mechanism. For electronics, motion sensors and servomotors will be used.

Where will come from?

MDF and acrylic are imported materials available in the laboratory. Motion sensors and servo motors will also be imported from China.

How much will they cost?

  • A 120x120x6mm MDF panel costs 30 USD
  • A 120x120x6 mm MDF panel costs 20 USD
  • A 100x100x3mm acrylic panel costs 30 USD
  • Motion sensors and servo motors cost 20 USD.
  • Attiny 44 costs 2USD
  • The approximate total cost for the manufacture of the final product will be 102 USD.

What parts and systems will be made?

The support structure will be made. Gears will be made The circuit that receives the motion sensor and controls the servomotors will be manufactured. The exhibition objects will be manufactured.

What processes will be used?

The pieces will be designed in 2D module cutting pieces and the design of the 3D exhibition objects. Subtractive manufacturing processes will be used for the MDF cladding and for the circuitry using the large format CNC milling machine and the small format CNC milling machine. Additive manufacturing processes will be used for the exhibits. The electronic design and production of the circuit board that receives the motion sensor and controls the servomotors will be carried out. An integrated microcontroller interface and programming will be designed for the automation of the sensor and the servomotors.

What questions need to be answered?

3D design with correct measurements and tolerances for assembly of parts, varies according to the material and position in which it will be placed. I will have to investigate the operation of the motion sensor I also need to find out the force of the servo motor to open and close the turning mechanism and gears.

How will it be evaluated?

The motor and drive mechanism must be working properly. The assembly of parts must fit Motion sensor must be activated to turn gear and activate sound
