Invention

Axolbot is the name of my project which comes from the words axolotl and robot. I use this name because two of the main characteristics of an axolotl is that they can regenerate their bodies and they can also induct a metamorphosis. The limb regeneration of an axolotl can be seen below, where we can see the regeneration cycle of they lose a limb.

My robot can not regenerate a module but they can have a similar function by 3D printing a new piece and place it instead. Regarding the metamorphosis, my robot can change all its modules (except the main module) or add new modules, and have a whole new structure like a car, a spider, a humanoide, an arm or any other structure you can imagine.

It is not the first modular robot but its clip and play system makes it very adaptable to build new structures or robots. I used digital fabrication to manufacture all the modules, components and pieces to ease the fabrication process and reproduce it. For the electronics, there are some board that can make the same as mine but I customized a board to increase the quantity of actuators that can be controlled by the robot and also to have a WiFi and bluetooth connection thanks to it main microprocessor. I would like to build a new board that fusion both boards (main board and power board) and decrease the space used.

Intellectual property

For my robot, I decided to use a Creative Common license since everything I created here is for public use. Nevertheless, there are multiple types of this license and I used the following website to chose what it best for me by answering a few questions.

After answering the questions, I found out that the best license for me is the following

Creative Commons Licence

The license is under the following terms:

  • Attribution
  • You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.
  • NonComercial
  • You may not use the material for commercial purposes.
  • ShareClike
  • If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original.
  • NoAdditionalRestrictions
  • You may not apply legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything the license permits.

Slide and video for my final project

For my slide presentation I use Inkscape to create it since I already have a lot of experience using it. I used multiple photos, renders, and videos that I recorded to put the whole content on it. Before choosing the images, I create a list of the main features that I wanted to show and later I search for the best photos or renders that describe them. The final result for the slide is shown below

Regarding the video, I used OpenShot which is a open-source program to create videos. As well as the slide, I used the same features and searched for the best videos that describe each of them. I have not a lot of experience with video edition but I think it turned out really good.
