APPLICATIONS AND IMPLICATIONS

13.WEEK

Assignment for “Applications and implications” is all about documenting and little bit explaining your idea, plan and researches for final project.

Task is to answer some of questions as follows:

WHAT WILL IT DO?

I didn’t figure out the name for my project yet so let’s call it “THE LAMP”. The idea is to make modern look lamp that is controlled by touch LCD. Specification of this lamp is not only to brighten up the view, is also to measure room temperature and humidity, also if the lamp is placed in room where is heating on natural gas, methane, it can detect the leakage of that gas and indicate it with red color of LED. Also would like to add some cool features like ultrasonic sensor for distance and to show nearness also with LED colors.

WHO'S DONE WHAT BEFOREHAND?

When I was searching trough fabacademy site to see who’s done some kind of lamp and I found several great projects like...Megumi Iwata, Georges Hanna and Wiam Lanz.

WHAT WILL YOU DESIGN?

Think this is the question what I’ll make rather then buy…first the whole housing is going to be made on laser cutter, joints for housing, LCD holder and some other parts for mechanism will be 3d printed, legs for the lamp will be casted of silicon and last but not least PCB will be designed and made.

WHAT MATERIALS AND COMPONENTS WILL BE USED?

Laser cutter: plexiglass 3-5mm and plywood 5mm

3D printer: basic black or white PLA

Molding and casting: silicone rubber

PCB: don’t know yet the summary of the components for my PCB so this one is going to be described on my Final project(link) site

Other: servo motor, ultrasonic sensor, temperature and humidity sensor, LCD, gas sensor, IR movement sensor

WHERE WILL IT COME FROM?

This one is hard to answer for me because I’m originally from Croatia and don’t know the best suppliers in this region, but I’ll have big help from instructors and my colleague Patrick for that so I’m not concerned. Think the electronical parts will be order from Mouser(link), because they have fast shipping.

HOW MUCH WILL THEY COST?

This question is connected with questions about components and material, I don’t know yet the cost of it but it shouldn’t be more than €100, components are not so expensive but I put that number just in case I burn some of them or misplace. That question is also be answered in detail on my Final project site when I order everything.

WHAT PARTS AND SYSTEMS WILL BE MADE?

Housing for electronics, electronics, connection parts and housing for LEDs

WHAT PROCESSES WILL BE USED?

Electronics: Eagle software; CNC for milling the board; reflow oven for hardening solder paste

Housing: Fusion 360 software; laser cutting and 3D printing; CNC mill to make mold for legs

Programming: with help of Arduino IDE and C codes

WHAT QUESTIONS NEED TO BE ANSWERED?

Well I think most of the questions needs to be answered at this moment.

For example:

1. how to make a stabile stand for the servo motor

2. how to attach servo motor to sides of the lamp and is it going to be stabile enough

3. should the power be internal or external

4. is it better to put LCD on the side of housing or somehow on the top of the lamp

Those are some of the main questions and they are need to be solved quickly because the time is flying.

PROJECT PLAN

Week 1: making some researching where, how, when

Week 2: getting materials and ordering components for project

Week 3: making all parts for housing (laser cutting, molding and casting, 3D printing

Week 4: miling of final PCB, soldering components, testing sensors and codes

Week 5: assambling all together and final testings

Week 6: making video and slide explaining what and how was it made

HOW WILL IT BE EVALUATED?

I suppose the project is going to be evaluated in couple of segments (electronics, programing, developing of design and knowledge after all), like for the weeks assignments. But think this is a good question for group of people that are working on one project but can be separately work. Evaluation is also a bit stressful for me, because I always hope that everything is fine and that there is not going to be big mistakes and of course that I understand all tasks correctly.
