WEEK1 : PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES

ASSIGNMENTS:

  • Plan and sketch potential final project

FINAL PROJECT IDEA

  • I am aiming to make FDM 3D printing filament maker machine. Concept is to extrude 3d printable plastic filament by using plastic granules as raw material.
  • My inspiration to pursue this project is rigorous familiarity with 3d printing technology, and interest to explore more in additive manufacturing. Vision behind this project is to develop more advanced 3d printing materials that satisfy need of industrial and medical standards.

Working Principle

Plastic granules will be pushed mechanically by Augur screw in cylinder, which is powered by Stepper motor. At the end there will be PID controlled heater to melt granules. Melted thermoplastic will be extruded through nozzle of 2.85/1.75 mm diameter and cooled down to get filament form.

I am planning to use NEMA23 stepper motor to rotate augur screw, so that I can control material flow rate by controlling motor RPM. In order to melt plastic granules I prefer to use PID based heater so I can have adjustable temperature settings.

Fabrication techniques

  1. 3D Printing - Material feeding hopper
  2. CNC Milling - Base platform and kickback part
  3. Laser cutting - Product casings
  4. Electronics Design and Production
  5. Embedded programming
  6. Molding and Casting
