Hello World!
My name is Francesca.
I am a London-based interdisciplinary textile designer. I work at the intersection of interactive materials, physical computing and digital technologies.
In my artistic practice I develop artistic installations, investigating the aesthetics of material processes, exploiting their transformative potential through programmed interactions. My design research focuses on the application of cutting edge technologies and smart and responsive materials to future ways of living.
I am here at the Barcelona FabAcademy to develop new skills ahead of my PhD. Working with reactive and interactive materials, I want to investigate how to integrate my skills in physically programming material behaviours with modeling such material surfaces in digital 3D systems. This is a fantastic place to get started!
A BIT OF BACKGROUND
I studied textiles and worked in the field in Italy for a while, developing digital prints and doing trend research. I soon realised I was not satisfied, and after spending some time looking for a new challenge, I committed to researching interdisciplinary environments where I could apply my skills in new ways. I therefore completed my MA in Computational Arts (Distinction) at Goldsmiths University of London in 2012.
I was soon awarded a Visiting Fellowship at School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong, where I worked for the fabulous artist and researcher Prof. Jane Prophet. Upon my return to the UK I won the NEON Digital Arts Festival 2013 commission in Dundee. Working with the community, the amazing curator Clare Brennan and researchers at Abertay University, I developed a series of interactive installations that reflected on the city's transformation.
I currently works as design researcher in the interdisciplinary P3I Design:STEM Studio at Northumbria University, investigating material technologies that can improve future products and industrial production chains.
I love sharing my skills with people so I frequently run workshops and work with charities and local schools, teaching coding and digital fabrication to teenagers, hoping that some of them will be as inspired as I am about these new opportunities.
My work as 'material interaction designer' was exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Watermans, Abertay University and University of the Creative Arts Canterbury. My work as textile designer has been presented at international textile fairs such as Milano Unica, Première Vision, Formex Stockholm, Intertextile Beijing and Shanghai.
