design and 3D print an object (small, few cm) that could not be made subtractively 3D scan an object - extra credit: print the object you scanned - extra credit: make the scanner
DESIGN
Object:
To design the object I used /Rhino & Grasshopper //DESIGN PROCESS:
Various parametric shapes were designed and tested for the following qualities:
Size/weight (has to be small enough)
Amount of material (has to be lightweight, use the less material as possible)
Location of holes/openings to create interesting patterns and make it lightweight .
Center of gravity (so that it can stand)
Various abstract/subjective aesthetic qualities
3D PRINTING
For 3d printing the model should be a closed mesh(repair meshes > fill holes). I exported my final 3d model as an .stl file. Files> ExportSelected > STL format. You should Uncheck Export Open Objects on the popup window.
I 3d print my object in Z Corp 510 by using Z powder. ZPrinting relates to the z axis which adds depth to the other 2 axes x,y as does 3D printing. As in many other rapid prototyping processes, the part to be printed is built up from many thin cross sections of the 3D model.In ZPrinters, an inkjet-like printing head moves across a bed of powder, selectively depositing a liquid binding material in the shape of the section. A fresh layer of powder is spread across the top of the model, and the process is repeated. When the model is complete, unbound powder is automatically removed
We have use the Zprint software to open the .stl file, place it in position and print it and print it. It is better if you place the long side horizontally to the base of the 3d printer, because in this way it takes less time to be printed.
///VASSEL:
//SCANNING 1:
For scanning the Vassel i have used the //123d catch
Steps:
/Download the 123d catch
/Shoot a loop of about 20 sequential photographs in small increments about your project. It is better if you shoot another loop from a different angle
Tips:
|For best results add newspaper or sticky notes around your subject as reference points
|Don't move your object when taking photographs
|Frame and focuse on the whole object
|Object shouldn't be overexposed or underexposed
/Upload the photos to the cloud to create your 3d model. The 3d model will be saved to your cloud storage space
/Repair the model. I repaired my 3d model and prepared it for 3d printingin Rhino but you can also do it easily in 123d catch.Here are some tutorials of how to do it.
//3D PRINTING:
For 3d printing the model should be a closed mesh(repair meshes > fill holes). I exported my final 3d model as an .stl file. Files> ExportSelected > STL format. You should Uncheck Export Open Objects on the popup window.
For 3d printing the object I used the makerbot, Replicator 2 and PLA material
and makerware software.
/File > Open and choose your STL file. Click on the button “move to platform” on the popup window.
/Move or rotate your object if it is necessary.
/Click on the “Make” button.
/Click on "Make it now"
/Select The replicator 2
/I selected standard Resolution(infil10%, 0.20mm of layer height)
/Raft and supports unchecked
MANEQUIN:
//SCANNING 2:
For scanning the Manequin i have used:
/skanect
/kinect camera
/kuka robot
We attached Kinect camera as a tool on the KUKA robot. Instead of rotating the kinnect we were rotating the base. In this way we could achive a smoother and stable movement rather than scanning by hand. I saved the model as .OBJ file from the Skanect software.
