Class7: Computer Controled Machining

Memo
This week I'v learned about computer controled machining.Assignment
This week's assignment is to make somethig BIG!!
Make something BIG !!
I decided to remake old sink I've used in my lab.fig.1 guinea pig: old sink unit
First, I measure the scale. It was difficult when I measure aroud the drain pipe.
fig.2 memo of scale
Second, I draw a sketch.
fig.3 sketch of idea
Then I considered that what design tool do I use. I chose Rihnoceros as a modeling tool in this time. Because I wanted to learn the Rihnoceors.
And I made a model of old-sink unit.
fig.4 model of old sink unit
I began to draw my idea. I felt difficult when I use a tool of writing curve.
After I made a model of my idea, I made them into 2D. I used a Rihnoceros command "MAKE2D". It is very usefull command.
fig.5 model of old sink unit
However...a 2D data made by Rihnoceros command "MAKE2D" has little problem. Some lines are not connected. Or Some line was piled up. So I cleaned up by the Illustrator.
I use two function of Illustrator, "SPLIT" & "MERGE". After you choose objects that is splited or piledup, you push "split" then "merge". It will be merged as a closed line.

Convert AI data to G-code
I used a software V-curve Pro. That can add dog bone-hole or T bone-hole. And we can determine the any options, value, condition... for control ShopBot.
Work Flow
-
[On V-curve]
- add T boarn-hole by V-curve
- add Φ8mm hole for fix boads onto ShopBot table
- make tool path
- generate and export ShopBot data
- import data
- drill only Φ8mm hole without clamp
- fix boad onto ShopBot table by screw using
- start cutting
- after machine is stoped, pick up them.
[On ShopBot controller]

Control ShopBot
I used ShopBot for cutting. It's first time for me to use it.

[My failure 1]
I broke 2 endmills... It's cost over $400. OMG!!
Broken endmills broke my heart...
fig. broken endmill
Endmill shot the head of screw. But I didn't understand why screw located on the way of endmill...because I located screws by checking on the display, V-curve. First, I fix the data and re-generated ShopBot data. But I broke endmill again... The cause is my misstake when I added hole for fix boads by V-carve. Maybe my date had any noise. So I selected extra dot when I chose holes on GUI. Then V-curve detect the extra dot and decision as a hole.
