  Fab Academy 2014
The road to Fab Academy began three years ago when I accepted a job as the technology coordinator for a small K-12 school system on an island just south of Blue Hill. I was approached by people at the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts to come learn about something called "Fab Lab". Since then, I've spent as much time there as I can get away with. It seems to be a unifying force connecting my many disjointed interests and experiences.

My final project includes an eyeball that needs to move from left to right and up and down. To achieve the required two axes of freedom, I'm going with a ball and socket joint. It's proving to be tricky - the ball has to be big enough to fill the socket but small enough that it will snap in. The first several attempts didn't go well, so I made this test file. You can see from the photo which one came closest. However the ball was so tight that the peg snapped off. The next step is to create a number of test balls of varying sizes to use in the winning socket.

Catching up on some homework - the ISP board (left) and the Adobe Illustrator drawing of my press fit assignment (right).

The Haystack Fab Lab had this MTM Snap sitting in a corner. I've been given the the nod to take this thing home and see if I can get it working this summer. Should be interesting!

Fab Labs can be found all over the world!
