Final Project Proposal

prosthetics_research

The project I like to bring to the class would be our Low Cost Prosthetics Project. This project has been set up between HONF (ID) and Waag Society (NL) since 2009. The main project is to seek and develop from the ideas of low cost Prosthetic using the Fablab methodology, but without forcing people to another dependancy. And the whole process (include the prototype) is documented and will be donated to the society.

And the one thing crucial of making prosthetics is, the alignment process where amputee people is scanned and measured to generate individual measurements to create a prosthetics for him/her. Prosthetics, either it for legs, hands, arms are very personal.

There are several way of people how to measure the amputee. One very basic way I learn from one Rehabilitation Centre in Yogyakarta is, the use a pendulum with string attached, and measure the legs. While Ottobock, a large company which focused on Prosthetics and Orthotics have a laser alignment system product called L.A.S.A.R.

So the project will be to engineer one D.I.Y laser alignment system, that close to L.A.S.A.R stander Ottobock. Alex Schaub, The Guru from Fablab Amsterdam share to me his pre-research of this alignment system.
