WEEK 5 3D Scanning and Printing

Group Assignment

  • test the design rules for your 3D printer(s)
  • This week’s group Assignment is written in here

    Individual Assignment

  • design and 3D print an object (small, few cm3, limited by printer time) that could not be made subtractively.
  • 3D scan an object (and optionally print it)

  • Our 3D Printer

    Ender 3 Pro
    Work Area: 220 x 220 x 250 mm
    Filament: ABS, PLA, etc
    Software:Ultimaker Cura 4.8.0

    Tools

    Pxmalion PLA 1.75mm Black
    Recommended Tempareture
    Nozzle:190-210℃
    Baseplate:0-60℃

    My idea

My inspiration came from my lastname. This image explains how to write my last name in kanji. Each character has meaning like the following

The first character means turtle, and the second one looks like the lattice. So I decided to make the little box with the lattices which shape like the second Kanji ,and locked the little turtle inside in the box.

    Designing

I used Fusion 360 for designing.

It contains "angle" and "overhang" so it could not be easily made subtractively.

    Sliceing and Converting Files

The software I used for slicing was Ultimate Cure(Ver 4.8.0). To shorten printing time, I did to things below.
    1.Set the appropriate printing quality.
There were big difference between each qualities.
    ・5h for Super Quality(0.12mm)
    ・2h42min for Standard Quality(0.2mm)
    ・2h for Low Quality(0.28mm)2h< I chose this.
    2. Adjust the ratio of the file size.
    ・3h15min for 100% size(59.2x50.1x74.2mm)
    ・2h6min for 80%size (47.4x40.1x37.7mm)< I chose this.

    Printing

Finally I could move on to print!

    Settings from the monitor.

The first layer should be checked carefully.

    Processing...

Unfortunately it didn't go well easily...there are many try and error , and I had to modify the design data or settings for three times.

    Problem 1

Since I didn't use any support for the bottom of the lattices, some parts of design were not printed correctly.

    Problem 2

By choosing the Auto-support mode of Ultimate Cura, some unintentional parts were printed.

    Problem 3

After I added the design of supports to my 3d data, I tried the third printing.
Although the design was made in consideration of the results of bridge test, it went like this.

    Hero Shots

    Scaning

For scanning I tried Qlonefor scaning.

This is app for iPhone or Android.Place the object in the middle of the provided mat, move slowly around the object to scan.

    Suspicious movement....

    Thoughts

  • The results of bridge and angle test don't always work for the actual printing. It depends on many other factors.
  • Scanning was much easier than I thought, and it was fun!
