Learning outcomes:

  1. valuate and select 2D and 3D software.
  2. Demonstrate and describe processes used in modelling with 2D and 3D software.

Stages:

  1. Find a new software.
  2. Try to understand and modeling.
  3. Get out with a model.

Starting with FreeCad

My favorite way to learn is to explore first without any background, then go through a tutorial. So i just open the software and explore till i can't move more.

Create new and change the workbench from workbenches list from Start to Draft, Part or design part.

Here after drawing circles i tried to change the placement for each one, Then i took my time to explore other workbenches to understand more.

Here i start working with 3D parts by Loft, Extruding and fillet orders.

Here i try Refolve command and how to deal with the angles of revolving to create a different shapes, Then i expoted the files into .STL

This was my exploring journey with a liitle look to tutorials, But generally i recommend to follow tutorials firts.

Another 3D trial with Sketchup

I made a base circle to start draw the base

I've used follow me order to make this rotated shape
Here i trying to ade the parts above

Let's put it inside the base and let's coppy it circularly
I can type the nummer of copies i want to make it circuralrly

Here i removing a part from the base and adding somethong else.
I've added a sphere inside the base to make the part more dificult to made subtractivly

Here i trying to centerize the parts together
Let's go a little mad and add other details

Exporting the file into STL extension for Cura

The Files:

STL file
Sketchup file

Starting with Gimp

My favorite way to learn as i said above is to explore first without any background, So in Gimp i tried to explore it as a clone of photoshop, but it wasn't an easy approach.

I took alot of time to figure out with alot of details.

File>New ... This is how to start and it's good to take a look on the advanced options.

Let's start exploring my tools and test it on that white art board.

Text command and free hand tools and how to color it.

The logo of my final project.

Gimp file

This was my exploring journey with a liitle look to tutorials, But generally i recommend to follow tutorials first.

Let's try a nother 2D software

Starting with Inkscape

I found it easier and more familiar.

Software interface, It's friendly and easly to figure out the tools location
Rectangle (or circle, Star and other shapes) sympol icons you can just press and click to drow one

By clicking this node and move it i can fillet the corners of rectangle to be rounded as i can
This tool to draw bezier curves and straight lines

With edit paths tool i can move the nodes as i want and position it anywhere to reshape any shape i've made

Text tool is the best where you can write any text and place it, change the font and change size

Freehand lines tool you can draw strait lines with any lenth and connect them togather, Her i've draw it with a randon angle
By holding Ctrl button i can draw a straitline with a straight angle
<
You can color any part or text(I chose text) by selecting it then click on any color and it will get colored
Fill bounded areas tool, It's painting bucket, Use it to color any closed shape or area with any color selected

File>save/save as to save the file to the computer
Select any extension to export with, I've selected .SVG(it's the default)

INkscape file

It;s .SVG extension, So you can open it with alot of softwares

The conclusion

from my humble experience through.

Software Strenth points Better to use in ... Limintations
FreeCad (3D) Open source a quick 3D model with details and make it parametric Poor and not friendly or easy to understand interface
Complex steps to reach what you want
SketchUp (3D) Very light and easy to learn and friendlu user interface A quick sketch or 3D model with adding Colors and materials
and export 2D views and shots
Poor in drawing tools and you can't make a parametric or professional designs or assemmbly
Gimp (2D) Friendly user interface
Professional tools
Making a detailed design with effects
and anu adjustments on images.
Not fammiliar like other 2D CAD tools and not easy
to deal with if you want to make a quick design
Inkscape (2D) Very fammiliar interface and easy to learn Quick sketchs to use in implementing on any printer
Make a quick edit on .svg files
Not easy to make a fascinating design or a professional one on it.

Done

  1. Modeling with FreeCad.
  2. Design with Gimp.
  3. Documentation with Audios.

New Learned

  1. Dealing with FreeCad interface.
  2. Dealing with Gimp interface.
  3. Code of Audio in HTML.
  4. Manage my time better.

Enjoyed with

  1. Exploring new tools(freeCad&Gimp&inkscape) are a new experience for me as a designer.
  2. Got a new prespictive as a designer.
  3. Recording audio.
